● Forte/Piano cut and paste (PRINT)


● Scissors
● Glue
● Pencils
● Crayons
● BAG melodies worksheet from last class
● iPads
● Name that Tune worksheet from last class
● Ukuleles

Content:

1st:

The teacher and students will sing the Hello Song as a warm-up.
● The teacher will review what the terms forte and piano mean in music.
● The teacher will explain that the students are going to be cutting out pictures and
gluing them under the correct category (forte or piano).
o The students will receive their papers and begin cutting the pictures out.
o The students will paste their pictures onto the sorting page.
o
The students will then be able to color their pictures.

If there is extra time, the teacher and students will sing the song John Jacob
Jingleheimer Schmidt together.

2nd:
● The teacher and students will sing the Hello Song as a warm-up.
● The teacher will ask the students if they know what a mannequin is.
o The teacher will explain the song The Mannequin
o The students will dance along with The Mannequin.
● The teacher will then review the three ways that notes can move – Step, Leap, and
Repeat.
o The teacher will review how to aurally identify a note as a step, leap or
repeat.
● The teacher will explain that today we are going to determine how to visually
identify notes as a step, leap or repeat.
o The teacher will show the students several examples on the board.
o The teacher will gauge the students’ understanding before moving on.
● The teacher will then explain that she is going to sing some examples of steps,
leaps and repeats.
o The students will move according to what they hear. (Step-take one step
forward, Leap-take one leap forward, Repeat-Stomp in place)
o This time, the students will do it as a competition between rows on the
carpet (or color tables at SE).
3rd:
● The teacher and students will sing the Hello Song as a warm-up.
● Students will be asked to identify the three notes on the board. (B, A, and G)
● Students will be given their worksheets from last class and will be asked to
complete naming notes for Hot Cross Buns and Twinkle Twinkle.
o The students will then practice these on the xylophones on their iPads.
o Students may play one of the songs for Miss. Fluke on the xylophone if
they can play the song without looking and have their entire worksheet
completed.
● The teacher walks around the room as the students complete their worksheets
and play the songs to check understanding.

4 :

● The students will start by guessing the genre of a song playing over the loud
speaker as a warm-up.
● The teacher will review all the notes they have learned, including the notes above
and below the staff and ledger lines.
● The teacher will review the directions for the Name that Tune worksheet.
o Using the notes they know, students are to fill in the letter names of the
notes of four popular songs.
o Once they are done filling in the note names, Miss. Fluke will spot check
their work.
o Once Miss. Fluke gives the go ahead, the students will get out their iPad
and play each song on their virtual xylophone.
o The student will then use what they played to identify the mystery title of
the song.
● At the end of the activity, Miss. Fluke goes over the answers for all four songs.
● If students are done early, they may practice playing one of the songs by memory,
then play it for Miss. Fluke on a real xylophone.
5th:
● The teacher will then allow students to get their ukuleles and sit with their
ukulele partners.
● The teacher and students will review the C7 chord.
o 1st finger, 1st fret, 1st string
o The teacher will demonstrate by playing the chord first, then will allow
students to practice this on their own, switching between partners.
▪ The teacher will walk around the classroom to check student
understanding and progress.
o The teacher will bring the class back together to echo a few rhythms by
strumming and playing the C7 chord.
● The teacher and students will review the C chord.
o 3rd finger, 3rd fret, 1st string
o The teacher will demonstrate by playing the chord first, then will allow the
students to practice this on their own, switching between partners.
▪ The teacher will walk around the classroom to check student
understanding and progress.
o The teacher will bring the class back together to echo a few rhythms by
strumming and playing the C chord.
● The teacher then teaches the students the A minor chord.
o 2nd finger, 2nd fret, 4th string
o The teacher will demonstrate by playing the chord first, then will allow the
students to practice this on their own, switching between partners.
▪ The teacher will walk around the classroom to check student
understanding and progress.
o The teacher will bring the class back together to echo a few rhythms by
strumming and playing the A minor chord.
● The students and the teacher will then play the song “Ho Hey” by the Lumineers
to practice the C and A minor chords.
● The students will put their ukuleles back on the ukulele cart as they found them
and line up for dismissal.
Assessments:

1st: The teacher will visually and aurally observe the students understanding the meaning
of forte and piano. The teacher will look over the students’ papers.
2nd: The teacher will visually and aurally observe the students understanding the three
ways that notes can move.
3rd: The teacher will visually and aurally observe the students identifying and performing
treble clef notes.
4th: The teacher will visually and aurally observe the students identifying and performing
treble clef notes and ledger line notes.
5th: The teacher will visually and aurally observe the students playing the C7, C, and A
minor chords on the ukulele.
