Lesson 7: When technology and humanity cross

Activating Prior Learning

Using a graphic organizer, list down some technology you see or you use at home, at
school or in your community, and in social media. Categorize them according to their
purpose (transportation, communication, education, etc.). Describe briefly how you or
the community use these technologies you mention.

Feedback
1. From the graphic organizer you completed at the very start of this section, choose
one technology in each category and give their risks and benefits as regards to their
purpose. Explain briefly each point you included.

2. “My Ideal Technology”. Think of an issue (be it environmental, economical, transportation,

etc.), and come up with a technology that would somehow address the issue. Give a description
of the features of your technology. What are its benefits and drawbacks to the society?

Autonomous Security Camera

This invention is inspired through many companies especially now that we are
still in a pandemic, wherein having physical contact and not sanitizing is very
dangerous. That’s why this invention has security cameras that will use for surveillance,
identification, and scanning of different health protocols. This security camera has a
thermal scanning that can scan people’s temperature from 15 meters, as well as having
accurate identification when used in private companies and churches to automatically
inform the system that the person entering in establishments was already scanned. It
can also be use in banks to automatically report suspicious movements around the
area.

Reflection
1. What do you think will happen if human person did not flourish in terms of science and
technology?

If human person did not flourish in terms of science and technology people will
not become reliant to the inventions and technologies that we have in this generation.
However, life can be difficult without science and technology, which is why people in the
past discover ideas and invented technologies to make our lives easier and more
convenient.

2. Is technology a friend or a foe?

Technology can be both a friend and an enemy. But for me I would take it as a
friend, simply because we are now living in a modern society wherein gadgets are
becoming user friendly. Almost all aspect of our lives really needs technology to help us
finish our work more easily. Now we don't need to go to the mall just to buy our things,
we can now shop online through our smart phones and computers. It really saves time,
less effort and more convenient. Another thing is it gives us unlimited access to
information that is very useful in our education. It also gives an opportunity for social
interaction through online communication. We can find new friends and acquaintances
through social media like having connection with people.

3. From among the different schools of thought presented above, which among them
describe you as a person or as a member of the community? Do you think it can develop
you better and attain a good life? Why or why not?

Among those mentioned above I think Stoicism is what describes me as a

person. And yes, I think it can develop me better and attain a good life because it
means that I am self-aware. Sometimes I appreciate being alone or being at peace. In
that way I can do self-reflection, I can rate myself if I am doing a good job, as well as to
relieve stress and to calm the mind from complicated things. As much as possible I want
to have self-control and stay out of arguments because that is not healthy to the mind
and unpeaceful.
