7001 presentation -Analysis on research design/method-area of CSR&FP

 Introduction:
GM everyone GM Dr . We are group 6 to give this presentation. Our group members included me
Qin Xueling, Zhang Shiyu and Wu Yunyao. Today we are going to talking about the research
design of two articles.
The two articles we selected were in a similar area of Corporate Social Responsibility and
Corporate Financial Performance.

The title of Article 1 is The Effect of Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility on Financial
Performance: Evidence from China. This article uses the perspective of corporate strategy to
examine the relationship between corporate social responsibility and corporate financial
performance in China by using the method of regression analysis.

The title of Article 2 is Assessing the long-term financial performance of ethical companies.
This study attempts to uncover CSR’s long-term financial performance using archival data on
composite CSR scores and individual CSR dimensions.

I will make an introduction of these 2 articles from the following aspects:

Research motivation, research objectives and questions, research design and method, data
collection and research results.

Research objectives 1.To examine the relationship 1. To examine the association
between CSR and CFP for between CSR and long-term
different strategies in China financial performance

2.To explore how the match

3. for defenders, CSR is
negatively correlated with CFP

After the multiple regression analysis which will be specific analysis by my group members, and
we turn to the research result of two articles.

Ok ,that all the introduction of these two articles.

So let’s welcome my group members to discuss further about the research design of two articles.
And then I will give a conclusion.
 Comparison:

research approach suit the Suit suit
research objectives or not ( use multiple regression
analysis to examine the
relationship between CSR
and CFP )
Variable definition clear clear

Variable Measure clear or Clear Not clear

not This article only tells where
to get the data for the
variables, but it does not
clarify how to measure
these variables.
Data selection clear clear
Data screening A little confused none
No clarification as to why
the financial sector
companies were deleted and
why the data were chosen
for this time period 2006-
2017
Regression analysis Clear Not clear
Robustness test Yes none

OK, let’s make a simple comparison of these two articles,

for the definition of variables and collection of data, both two articles are clear.
For the measurement of variables, article 1 is clear , however article 2 only tells where to get the
data for variables, it does not clarify how to measure these variables.
Also article 1 conducted data screening and robustness test which were ignored by the article 2.

 Conclusion:
After the above analysis, we can see that the entire research design of the first article is quite clear
compared to the second article

In conclusion, the research design and data collection method should suit the research questions
and research objectives. Also, the explanation of the data source and method used should be
clarified in the article. Only in this way this literature could contribute to future research in a
similar field.

That is all the presentation of group 6. Thank you for your attention.
