Lanais are slightly different from

LANAIS
The definition of a lanai is a patio or
open-sided living area, or is one the Hawaiian
island. Lanai is a term most frequently used in
Hawaii to describe a specific type of porch. Most
often it's used to describe an enclosed porch
with a concrete or stone floor. Lanais offer an
interesting alternative to porches or sunrooms
for creating usable outdoor space.
FUNCTION
Lanais offer more protection than a
traditional porch because they usually feature
screens or windows. They give homeowners that
coveted indoor/outdoor living feeling, and are
typically used for three seasons. Many are
furnished with comfortable outdoor-style
furniture to make them feel like a second living
area. Lanais also function as exterior hallways
and provide shelter for the exterior passageways
of a building.

WALLS AND CEILINGS
Lanais share one wall with the house but
it shouldn’t be overlooked in your decorating
scheme. Since lanais are found in tropical areas,
go with an island vibe when choosing colors.
FLOORS
Ideally, your lanai’s floor should be both
functional and beautiful. Look to durable
materials such as concrete and tile. If your lanai
is set on a concrete slab, consider painting the
floor to make it more attractive. Be sure to use
paint or stain especially formulated for use on
concrete.
FURNITURE
Keep the lanai’s light, airy feeling going
with the furniture you choose. Pieces crafted
from natural elements such as rattan and wicker
are right at home in a tropical setting. Create a
conversation area with a rattan couch and
matching chairs grouped around a glass-topped
table of the same material. 

LOCATION
Lanai Rooms are located on the ground
level with an extended private terrace area,
offering direct access to the swimming pool and
lush tropical gardens. Lanais are commonly
located between the garage and the kitchen, the
patio and the kitchen or living area, and the
living area and service area.

ACCESSORIES
 Blur the line between your outdoor living
room and its surroundings with plants.
Container gardens work well, especially on small
lanais. Be sure to research what plants work best
for your climate and sun exposure.

SIZE AND SHAPE

Lanais may extend the full length of a
building and may be designed for a maximum
traffic loads. They may be a small as the area
under a roof overhang. However, a lanai at least
4’ (1,219mm) wide is desirable. The length and
type of cover is limited only by the location of
areas to be covered.
