TUTORIAL 1

1. Figure 1 shows P-x1-y1 diagram for methanol(1)/water(2) system at 333.15 K. Show on the
diagram how to determine the following points and what are the values.
a) Vapor pressure of methanol and water at 333.15 K.
b) Pressure and liquid phase composition of methanol that is in equilibrium with vapor
containing 46 mole % water at 333.15 K.
c) Pressure and vapor phase composition of water that is in equilibrium with liquid
containing 28 mole % methanol at 333.15 K.
d) Liquid and vapor phase composition of methanol that is in equilibrium at temperature
333.15 K and pressure 70 kPa.

2. Figure 2 shows T-x1-y1 diagram for methanol(1)/water(2) system at 50 kPa. Show on the
diagram how to determine the following points and what are the values.
a) Saturation temperature of methanol and water at 50 kPa.
b) At 50 kPa and 325 K, the methanol(1)/water(2) mixture consists of 32 mole %
methanol. What is the phase at this point?
c) The mixture in b) is heated at constant pressure until the first bubble of vapor appears.
Determine the temperature and vapor phase composition of methanol at this point.
d) The heating process in c) continues until the last drop of liquid disappears. Determine
the temperature and liquid phase composition of methanol at this point.
e) The heating process continues to 358 K. What is the phase at this point?
f) At 50 kPa and 345 K, the methanol(1)/water(2) mixture consists of 74 mole %
methanol. What is the phase at this point?
g) The mixture in f) is cooled at constant pressure until the first drop of liquid appears.
Determine the temperature and liquid phase composition of methanol at this point.
h) The cooling process in g) continues until the last bubble of vapor disappears.
Determine the temperature and vapor phase composition of methanol at this point.
i) The cooling process continues to 320 K. What is the phase at this point?

and a T-x1-y1 diagram for a pressure of 90 kPa for benzene(1)/ethylbenzene(2) system.
