because it allows for better characterization and classifica-
tion of the anatomy.14 Contrast swallow studies should be
avoided because they can cause respiratory compromise.2
More experience by health care staff is needed to make
an early and correct diagnosis of TA. As the development
and implementation of synthetic grafts improves, more
patients may be candidates for reconstruction of the trachea
and require the care of an anesthesia provider. As discussed,
health providers should be aware of the multiple areas at
which misdiagnosis can occur in TA. This requires an intimate
knowledge of the airway anatomy and the ability to recognize
possible complications that may occur with this condition. E
