NANE SAGRADO

Nane Sagrado (Sacred Nane) is a group of Noke Kuin

musicians, led by Varivinya and Merõta Varinawa, who
are always accompanied by other young and elders of
their people. Founded with the aim of spreading the
Noke Kuin culture through art, Nane Sagrado shares
both traditional a cappella songs and more recent
versions with musical instruments. After numerous
travels through Brazil, the group goes on a mission to
Europe for the first time, accompanied by their
patriarch, the shaman and great master of culture
Metsa Varinawa.
"Nane", in the Noke Vana language, is the
name of the plant also known as genipap,
which produces a black ink that when in
contact with human skin remains painted for a
few days, like a temporary tattoo. It is with
nane that the Noke Kuin and other indigenous
peoples of Brazil painted themselves for
battles and celebrations. A true medicinal
paint, nane is used to paint ancestral graphics
that represent symbolic and spiritual designs
that protect and beautify those who use it.
The Noke Kuin are an indigenous people of the
Pano linguistic family who inhabit the Brazilian
Amazon. They are known as the kambo people and
for having a strong tradition in the use of medicines
such as ayahuasca and rapé. Divided into 6 clans,
among them the Varinawa (people of the sun) and
Kamanawa (people of the jaguar), they are one of
Noke Kuin the few Brazilian indigenous groups that still
maintain their entire population speaking the native
language, the Noke Vana, which shows their
remarkable strength in keeping the ancestral
tradition.
Metsa Varinawa is one of the most well-known and
respected shamans and culture masters of the Noke
Kuin people. Son of the legendary Peo Varinawa,
born into a family of traditional spiritual strength. His
research work with the most ancient sages of his
people led him to a repertoire of nearly one hundred

Metsa Varinawa and a half traditional chants, making him one of the
greatest connoisseurs of Txiritis and Saitis chants
among the Noke Kuin.
Keeper of the secrets of uni (ayahuasca) and rume
(snuff), Metsa is a master of medicine and a teacher
of songs, paintings and traditional stories of his
people. He carries with him the power of healing
and when he tells the Noke Kuin mythical narratives,
from the times of the ancient Romeyas (shamans),
those who listen to him always have a lot to learn.
Varivinya Varinawa

Chief of Aldeia Martins-Varinawa, Varivinya is Metsa's

eldest son and his father's greatest apprentice. A young
leader among the Noke Kuin, Vinya stands out in his
people's ceremonies, with his striking presence, of the
purest Varinawa energy, his touching speeches and his
way of leading the group through the traditional songs
and dances. Already having years of experience with
countless trips through Brazil, Vinya travels to other
countries for the first time to conduct rituals and
participate in congresses as a representative the Noke
Kuin.
Merõta Varinawa

One of the greatest artists of the Noke Kuin, Merõta

Varinawa is a prominent musician (txana) of his people. A
true singing bird, multi-instrumentalist, a messenger of the
forest, Merõta is the composer of more than 100 songs on
the guitar, among instrumentals of ancestral chants and
others of his own composition. His music brings emotions
that awaken the cure of ayahuasca and also all the joy
contained in this medicine, making people dance to the
sound of his guitar and his singing until the break of the
day. This young artist is also a great painter and with the
sacred inks of genipap and annatto he transmits the
medicine from plants, color and ancestral drawings.
