REFLECTION PAPER.
•How clear is communicative competence for both teachers and students?

-In my opinion about how clear is the communicative for both teachers and students is that the

students are trying and very eager and willing to enhance their communicative competence by

learning from their educators, it is clear that the students is willing to learn, adapt and study

English as to improve their communicative competence in order to confidently communicate in

other people using English as language. For the teachers or educators, it’s crystal clear that the

profession and abilities of the professor in communicative competence is radiating because of

their dedication to teach their students, they cannot be able to teach their students without

studying the history of English, on how to use in appropriate and accurate way, they sacrificed a

lot of blood and sweat in order to become a professional teacher, to teach, to inspire, to persuade

their students to become an effective person who gain competence in communicating in English,

it is very clear for both teacher and students seeing their effort and dedicate to enhance their

communicative competence.

•How relevant are our lessons in the
classrooms to what’s going on with today’s communication?

-I think the lessons that our professor in introduction to linguistics teach in our classroom or meet

is very rampant and relevant nowadays, with today’s communication in our country simply

because it tackles how we must communicate using English, because we all know and there’s a

lot of studies claiming that our country which is the Philippines has the least competence when it

comes to studying and learning English, with this issues people in our country are trying to learn
the best way on how to enhance their communicative competence because English will open a

lot of opportunities to them, it will provide job-opportunity whether it’s local or international,

that is why I think the lessons in our subject is relevant on what’s happening in today’s

communication not just having job opportunities but to communicate and understand English

accurately and effectively.

•How much do we know, as teachers, of the ‘English’, the ‘englishes’, and the

‘englishing’ of our students, of the (linguistic) community they belong to, of the ‘world’
they are going?

-If I am now a teacher or educator of English it’s really important to know and define what is

English when it comes to the standard English, world Englishes and any variety of English in the

world, also know to compare and contrast them, if a student or leaner came from different variety

of this English, I would really appreciate if I am their professor in English, I am happy to adjust

and educate them on their prefer type of English that they belong, in every what community or

country they came from, I am happy to teach and serve them because it would not affect this the

way I teach, the way I communicate to them, I am teacher, I must study and master the history of

their English, whether it’s my native or not, this could not affect on teaching them but to inspire

and aspire them to become me, who’s willing to study, learn, and adapt a variety of English in

the world that they came from, their differences in English is not hindrance for me to teach them,

my job is to cure the ignorance in them to have conscious on the what’s happening on the world

also that they are going to.

•Where are we in this whole cline of communication? of ELT  debate?
•What are we doing?  What should be done?

-The ELT debate discuss a lot of things especially in our country based on what I read, in the

whole cline of communication we are in the position where the mindset of society affects the

way we adapt the global Englishes language teaching, because of this it looks like the crab

mentality of the people wants to bringdown those people who want to teach and study English,

the English is now the basis of intellectual capabilities of the people who live in the Philippines,

when educators or simple person corrected their grammatical structure or right pronunciation of

a sentence they will automatically labeled you as superior or being called “pabibo” when your

only intention was to correct them, in this debate tackles a lot of problems and issues when it

comes to global Englishes language teaching. What are we doing? I can describe those people

like a rotten tomato, when a rotten tomatoes are stored in tomatoes it will become infected and

rot, that’s what’s happen to the people in our country, there is a discrimination if you correct

someone’s grammar, but if they know that you can speak or communicate in English they tend to

expect that you are superior, that you are genius as I said a while ago that this is the basis of

intellectual capabilities of a person but it’s not, English is just a language not a test of

knowledge, what we must do is to start changing our mentality to avoid judging people of who

commit a wrong grammar or pronunciation we can correct them without hurting and humiliating

whether it’s public or not, don’t be afraid to ask for help and don’t be shy to accept that you are

wrong, we need to be open minded, because this English is a very critical topic in our country,

we must change ourselves first then the rest will follow, we can learn and understand English

and we can use it in all the way, explore and study so that you can acquire communicative

competence that unlocks a lot of opportunities to yourself and everybody.

•What is its implication to teaching and learning, and benefits to community and society?

-The implication of teaching and learning plays a pivotal in molding everyone’s mind, it also

needed in making the community and society better, it has a lot of benefits such as educating the

people who live in that specific community or area, spreading the information about specific

things such as plan and so and so for. Implication of teaching and learning creates a relationship

that the only intention is nothing but educating and guiding them, making the community able to

express themselves, their ideas, opinions and thoughts, it also created a peaceful environment

where everyone seen and validated and it leads to peace and harmony, if the people who live in

that community is educated because of this a future is already prepared and ready, where they

improve the quality of life because teaching can increase productivity and creativity of anyone

while learning is applying all the lessons that they learn, if they learned I think they are able now

to teach and educate people in that community and to continue what has been started until for the

next generation.
