Artistic Gymanastics

Self-Paced Mode  The roots of gymnastics can be traced to ancient Greece where men
gathered at “gymnasiums” to practice such exercises and also discuss
art, literature and philosophy. The word “gymnastics” derives from the
Greek “gymnos” which translates literally to “naked” That’s why it was

limited to men in its early days.

 Artistic gymnastics is a dynamic sport where gymnasts complete short
routines on equipment specially designed for the sport. Although there
are other disciplines of gymnastics, artistic gymnastics is generally the
most well known among the general public.
Artistic gymnastics has been an Olympic staple since the first modern Games
were held at Athens 1896. Back then, only men competed on apparatus that
had developed earlier in the 19th century. A women’s event was added at
Amsterdam 1928, at which time the sport began to evolve into what we
recognize today.
The popular sport uses various apparatuses for male and female events, is
performed by elite athletes at the Olympic level, and utilizes a complex scoring
system. At the competitive level, artistic gymnastics is usually dividedinto
separate programs for men and women, with some differences and
similarities in the apparatuses used.

Gymnastics is governed by the Federation Internationale de

Gymnastique. The F.I.G. governs and regulates the sport through the Code of
Points and manages all official international elite competitions. The F.I.G.
designates and assigns national federations, like USA Gymnastics in the United
States, to manage gymnastics in individual countries. ( previously known as the
United States Gymnastics Federation).

Is men’s gymnastics different than women’s gymnastics?

though some of their apparatus are different as are the associated rules.

History and Origin of Gymnastics

o A Gymnastics has existed as a competitive sport for approximately 140
years. Prior to that, gymnastics were widely practiced by amateur
athletes, but often as a hobby or as part of a training regimen for
another sport. Artistic gymnastics made its Olympic debut at the 1896
Olympic Games, and featured men's horizontal bar, parallel bars,
pommel horse, rings, and vault. Most of the medals were swept by a
highly skilled German team. It was not until the 1924 Games in Paris
where Olympic gymnastics as we know it came to be. Male gymnasts
competed for individual Olympic medals on each gymnastics apparatus
in addition to combined individual and team exercises. In 1928, a
women’s competition was added. The United States fielded its first
women’s gymnastics team for the 1936 Games in Berlin.
Types of Gymnastics
Vault — an artistic gymnastics event for men and women, in which the athlete
leaps over a vault or pommel horse, using the hands for pushing off.
Uneven Bars — an artistic gymnastics apparatus used only by female gymnasts
comprising a pair of parallel bars set at different heights. (also called or
asymmetric bars).
Horizontal Bar — artistic gymnastics event also known as high bar, where
athletes perform aerial stunts on a horizontal bar.
Parallel Bars — an artistic gymnastics discipline performed by men which
comprises predominantly of swings and vaults with two parallel bars.
Rings — gymnastics routine using a pair of rings, that are suspended by straps.
Balance Beam — a female Olympic Games gymnastics event in which a gymnast
balances on a narrow horizontal bar raised off the floor, while performing
exercises.

space

performs routines atop a symbolic horse.

The 4 Main Events in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics

1. VAULT
The vault event involves feats of skill that
begin with a running start, a jump off a
springboard, and the use of a stationary
device called a vault or a vaulting horse.
gymnasts should "stick" their landings,
which means landing in place without
needing steps to steady themselves.
2. UNEVEN BARS
Female gymnasts comprising a pair of
parallel bars set at different heights.
(also called or asymmetric bars). This
event involves a series of maneuvers
performed on two horizontal bars set at
different heights. Gymnasts are
required to transition from one

movement to the next without pauses or

meaningless swings on the bars.

3. BALANCE BEAM

bar raised off the floor, while performing exercises. In this event, gymnasts
perform routines on a four-inch wide solid beam. They must present the same
grace and execution one might expect if they were performing on the floor.
Judges look for routines that showcase excellent height, flexibility, and power.

4. FLOOR EXERCISE
Gymnasts perform a tumbling and
dance routine on a floor space. The
floor exercise is set to music and
involves gymnasts performing a
series of tumbling and athletic feats
interspersed with dance
choreography. Judges look for
versatile use of floor space, changes
in the direction and level of
movement, theatrics, command of
music, and height and distance of
jumping and tumbling maneuvers.

movements plus required scissored leg elements. The hands are the only part
of the body that may touch the pommel horse. Judges look for flow with
steady, controlled rhythm.

2. STILL RINGS
Gymnastics routine using a pair of rings,
that are suspended by straps. Throughout
the rings event, the rings must remain still
and under control at all times. Arms must
never shake, and the gymnast’s body
must remain straight with no
arching.
