Market Share of English Language Paperback and Kindle books

in Acupuncture and Acupressure: A 5-Year Analysis

Abstract
Purpose: This study was done to find out the market share of new English language Paperback and
Kindle books publications on acupressure and acupuncture in terms of quantity.
Methods: Retrospective secondary data collected from a bibliometric approach was used to search for
all acupuncture and acupressure related Paperback and Kindle books published between 2009 and
2013 on amazon.com.
Results: A total of 798 new Paperback and Kindle books (542 paperback and 256 kindle) were published
during the 2009-2013. In 2009, the total share of new book publication in kindle format was 14%, but
in 2013, it increased to 41%. It improved the total market share of new books (paperback- 68%, Kindle
32%)
Conclusion: Though this study reveals a big gap in market share of paperback and Kindle book share,
especially in Acupuncture; the constant growth in the market share of new Kindle books in both
Acupressure and Acupuncture categories shows an increase in the popularity of Kindle books and it
may a indicate a bright future of Kindle books.
