UNDERSTANDING TERM PAPER
A term paper is a research paper authored by students over a course of an
academic term. In many cases, the topic you are required to write will be
chosen by your professor while in many cases, you might be asked to choose
your own research topic.
A good term paper should have the following components:
1. Introduction: states the issues the student is addressing. It explains
why the chosen topic is important. What practical, scientific or
theoretic purpose this topic has been selected for study. The following
issues should be considered:
- The introduction is meant to ‘sell’ the paper. It should start with
interesting facts, surprising statements, contradictions, or statements
that point outs the importance of the study.
- Provide an overview of the issue and state the goals of the paper. Also
explain how the specific topic meets a broader context. Also tell the
reader what you are arguing or what question you are addressing.

2. Body: highlights the major points of the exploration/research you

have undertaken and explain what investigating strategy you have
chosen. It describes the nature of the results. This part can be further
divided into sub-sections. The following steps should be considered.
- Do a lot of literature search on the issue you have chosen; collect as
many academic publications, journal articles as possible and review
them. Read the materials you have collected carefully. Summarize the
arguments and theories of various authors you agree with. Also
highlight what points were absent and not considered in the author’s
research.
- The text should be well structured and divided into sections and sub-
sections as needed; each sub-chapter should have a title and should
refer to one particular idea or main point.
- Develop arguments gradually, all your ideas should move from
general to specific ideas; data or quotations should be cited and
provided in the references in the APA format at the end of the
term paper.

3
- Don’t rely on the sources only. It is your paper, and it should
contain your original idea about the topic. Keep a balance between
the ideas you have cited and your own idea.

3. Conclusions: It explains how the results can be implicated. The

following issues should be considered.
- Refresh the points you have already highlighted in the body of the
term paper and restate the thesis statement. Do not present any
new information in this paragraph.
- Describe the final results of your research. Be aware that you do
not conclude anything outside the evidence and analysis you have
presented in the body section.
- Explain the implication for future studies on the issue.
- Write your concluding statement (what did you learn?)

term paper in alphabetical order)
