The AMBER Alert system is being used in all 50 states, the District of Columbia,

Indian country, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and 30 other countries. A
lot of countries around the world followed the success of AMBER Alerts in the
U.S. and created similar alert systems. Each country adapted the system to fit
its own needs and requirements but the goal remains the same — use the eyes
and ears of the public to help law enforcement recover a child who is in
immediate danger. As of January 1, 2021, 1,029 children have been safely
recovered as a direct result of issuance of an AMBER Alert in the case.
In addition to the Stat 50 United es, the amber alert is active in: Australia, Canada,
Jamaica, Mexico, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan and european countries. (imagem

In 2008, AMBER Alert Netherlands was launched and became an example of how
citizen sourcing can work; in 94 percent of the cases, the child was successfully
found. Inspired by the success of the Dutch AMBER Alert, the AMBER Alert Europe
foundation was launched in 2013
AMBER Alert Europe is a foundation that assists in saving missing children at risk by
connecting law enforcement with other police experts and with the public across
Europe. This system brings together 42 official organisations, public authorities and
business entities from 26 countries.

Portugal:
An AMBER Alert in Portugal allows police officers to seek the assistance of the public
when investigating child abduction cases.

The details are spread through the project Alerta Rapto which is based on a website in
SharePoint where the PJ puts the information (video, audio and text) about the kidnap.
The partners involved in this project have access to the website in order to download
and publish the information

The criteria for launching an AMBER Alert in Portugal:

 In case of kidnap or abduction (not simple disappearance);

 Risk of life or health of the victim;
 Information available that may allow for the tracing of the victim or suspect and
 Victim is under 18.

The combination of these factors does not imply the automatic activation of the alert
when that may increase the risk for the victim or compromise the investigation

Actors involved and their role in a national AMBER Alert:

The organizations involved with the amber alert in Portugal are Procuradoria Geral da
República and they have the Decision to activate the alert

And also, the Criminal Police (Policia Judiciaria) that helps PGR in the decision process,
control the systems and does the related criminal investigation.
