Northern

Renaissance
What?
The Northern Renaissance refers
to the art, architecture and
philosophy that took place outside
of Italy. It occurred around 1430
starting with Jan van Eyck as the
first artist to follow the Italians
techniques.

Where?

Some of the main places that it

occurred was in France in the
1400's, Germany, English and
Dutch territories. Each area
brought a different reason,
purpose and message to the
movement.
Religion

Northern Renaissance counties

received a lot of backlash from the
Protestant Reformation. The
Iconoclasm changed the art
making it more humble and a
toned down view of everyday
reality.

Gothics
While the Italian Renaissance focused
on the classical Greek and Roman
aesthetics, Northern Renaissance
artist turned to Gothic sensibility. You
can see this protrayed in their
"woodblock printing, illuminated
manuscripts, and somber darker
psychological undertones".

Age of
Exploration

During the Renaissance, many of

these same countries were setting
out to world exploration. Art and
Philosophy played a part in trade
influence and the new world had
an influence on the Renaissance as
well.
