Lesson: Statistical and Non-statistical Questions

In this lesson you will learn how to differentiate between statistical and non-
statistical questions.
You will start with the definition and then look at examples to help you understand
the definition.
After going through the definition and example, answer the activities provided.

Statistical Question- has answers that will probably vary.

Examples:
1. What time did the grade 7-Amorsolo students get up this morning?
(Since we would collect data from grade 7-Amorsolo students and their answers can
be 5am, 5:30 am, or even 6am which means that there is variability(pagkakaiba-iba)
from their answers. Thus, this is an example of statistical question.)

2. What time do most people eat their lunches?

(Every person do not eat their lunch at the same time, some people starts to eat
their lunch between 11:00am-12-00 pm or between 12:00-1:00 pm or even earlier or
later. From this, their will be variability from their answers so, this is an example of
statistical question.)

3. What do 7th graders prefer to eat for lunch?

Non-statistical Questions- has an exact answer or only one answer.

Examples:
1. What time did I wake up this morning?
( This question has only one answer since you’re only asking yourself. There will be
no variability which means that it is not a statistical question.)
2. What time did you eat your lunch?
3. Does Sheila loves to play in the rain? (This question only ask one person which is
Mila and her answer can be yes or no so, there will be no variability which means
that it is not a statistical question.)
Activity 1: Determine whether the following question is statistical or not. Write your
answers in a 1/2 sheet of yellow paper, crosswise.
1. How much money does students spend everyday?
2. What is the weight of your bag?
3. Do dogs run faster than cats?
4. What profession senior high school students want to achieve someday?

7. Do you believe that there are many good people out there?
8. How many pairs of shoes does Mika have?
9. Does your brother looks cool than his brother?
