Module 9 – Pediatric Surgery Reflection Paper

Significant learnings for the module:

1. Pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of upper
Gastro-Intestinal obstruction
2. Pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of diseases of
the lower gastro-intestinal tract.

I think that these topics really stuck with me because the trigger for the SGD was a case
related to these topics and I spent more time on these compared to the other topics in
the learning objectives to be able to diagnose and properly manage the patient in the
case.

Specific difficulties:
1. Clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of neonatal surgical conditions
2. Clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of Pediatric Tumors
These were the topics I feel like I overlooked in reading for the SGD. I did find these
topics interesting and I do want to read more on these.
3. Fluid and electrolytes in children
This topic was a struggle for me. For some reason, I can’t internalize this topic yet. I
think more practice in solving will help me understand this topic more.
