Global Report Bares Filipino Kids Poor Learning Skills

The Filipino students who scored poorly in reading comprehension in the Programme for
International Student Assessment in 2018 mostly come from low-income backgrounds where
family and school environments do not motivate growth mindsets. According to a recent
UNICEF report, less than 15% (Bernardo) of Filipino children can read a simple text by the age
of ten, prompting a lawmaker to request that the government open all schools in the country for
limited in-person classes.

The finding in UNICEF's latest joint report with UNESCO and the World Bank "translates to a
learning poverty of more than 85 percent," according to Senate Basic Education Committee
Chairman Sherwin Gatchalian. (Bernardo)The figure is slightly lower than the World Bank's
November report, which stated that 90% of children are illiterate.

Due to the lack of resources for student success, poverty has a direct impact on academic
achievement. Numerous studies have shown the connection between low socioeconomic status
and low achievement, which is closely related to a lack of resources. The quality of education in
public schools remains poor. Class sizes are big, there is a lack of learning materials, and
teachers are paid poorly based on what I believe are factual information.

From my perspective I believe that it is the financial stability and how good a parent thinks when
it comes to disciplining their childrens to learn. But the main cause of this problem is probably
their financial status . There are two broad views as to why people stay poor. One emphasizes
differences in fundamentals, such as ability, talent or motivation. The other, the poverty traps
view, differences in opportunities which stem from access to wealth. One of the main reasons
why people stay poor, they hangout with the wrong group of people. If you spend time with 6
smart people you’ll be the 7th. In conclusion, the reason why Filipino kids have bad learning
skills from my perspective, they are surrounded with the wrong group of people.
