This research study aimed to determine the significance of studying Biology 1 as a specialized

subject in improving higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) of 30 selected grade 12 Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students of Mount Carmel College of Baler during the first
quarter of the school year (SY) 2020–2021. Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:
What is the profile of the respondents? What are the significance and the suggestions of the STEM
students to promote the subject?

On the other hand, the researcher conducted a non-experimental quantitative research design, a
survey with close-ended questionnaires. A deductive approach of inquiry was adopted, starting with
theoretical research questions, and ended with the empirical data. To satisfied the objectives of the
research study, they used non-probability sampling, availability sampling in particular. Researchers
tallied, tabulated, evaluated, and interpreted the data.

The researchers found out that 66.7% (20) of the participants were encouraged to justify a stand
or a decision on the issue affecting living things, their vital processes, and the environment; and 80% (24)
completely agreed to offer suggestions for improvement on an output highlighting the natural function or
processes of life and living organisms. The researchers, therefore, conclude that studying Biology 1 is
crucial to improve HOTS for offering valuable knowledge and skills on how things work in everyday life.

Based on the recommendation drawn. There should be an organization willing to accommodate

the potential scientist, biologist, or researchers.
