5 MOMENTUM
is a vector quantity
(physical quantities that have magnitude and direction)

All moving objects have momentum

Direction of momentum is the same as direction of velocity of an object

Objects that move with high velocity or large mass have a large momentum
(ɔ • ᴗ • )ɔ
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
p = momentum
m = mass
v = velocity

kg ms⁻¹
P = MV
kg = mass
ms⁻¹ = velocity
ELASTIC Total energy is conserved
Total kinetic energy is conserved
COLLISION Total momentum is conserved
An elastic collision is a collision
in which there is no net loss in
kinetic energy in the system as Total momentum before collision =
a result of the collision.
Total momentum after collision

mₐuₐ + mᵦuᵦ = mₐvₐ + mᵦvᵦ

Total energy is conserved
total kinetic energy is not conserved
(there is a loss in kinetic energy)
total momentum is conserved
Total momentum before collision = total

MA U A + M BUB = (MA + M B ) V

the principle of conservation mₐ mᵦ
of momentum also applies to
Total momentum before explosion =
explosion.
Total momentum after explosion

mₐ(0) + mᵦ(0) = mₐvₐ + mᵦvᵦ

∴ 0 = mₐvₐ + mᵦvᵦ
