FIRE PREVENTION & PROTECTION: The basic precautions for fire prevention in welding or cutting
work are:

The attached Hot Work Permit shall be filled out for each hot work job and kept available at
the job site.
Fire Hazards. If the object to be welded or cut cannot be moved, all movable fire hazards in
the vicinity should be taken to a safe place away from the area.
Guards/Fire Blankets. If the object to be welded or cut cannot be moved, and all the fire
hazards cannot be removed, then guards shall be used to confine the heat, sparks, and slag,
and to protect the immovable fire hazards.
A fire watch shall be continuously present during the entire hot work activity and 1 hour will
present after completion. In addition, the work area should be monitored every 30 minutes
for 4 hours after the welding and cutting are complete.
Restrictions. If the requirements listed above cannot be followed, welding and cutting should
not be performed.
Follow instruction, training and guidance given by the employer in respect of Safe System of
Work.
Ensure that, regulators are fitted, undertake frequent checks of hoses and connections and
that gas bottles are stored securely.
Shields, screens and barriers as detailed on the risk assessment, must be used in every
instance.
Co-operate with management arrangements for health and safety involving hot work.
Report to management any instances where you feel your health has been compromised by
the work being conducted.
Do not attempt to carry out hot work unless trained to do so.

GRINDERS HAZARDS & CONTROLS MEASURES:

HAZARDS: The most common causes of injury to operators and nearby workers from angle
grinders are lacerations from attachments that break and become projectiles, and lacerations
from angle grinder kickbacks, Kickback happens when the angle grinder suddenly thrusts back
towards the operator because of it grabbing or jamming on the materials being worked on.

CONTROLS MEASURES: Before implementing controls, should consider:

If it is necessary to perform the task (e.g., if the weld will be hidden from sight and profiling
is not needed for stress distribution, does it have to be ground?)
Safer ways to achieve the end outcome (e.g., using a bench-mounted saw for cutting). When
purchasing an angle grinder, the following safety features should be considered:
Anti-kickback safety clutch
Soft-start vibration reducing handle
Restart protection
Grinder fitted with braking system to rapidly stop the wheel
Noise-reduction grinding disk.
