Section A [45 marks]

Answer all questions in this section.

1. The length of the fish caught from a river is show in the table below.
Length, x cm Cumulative frequency
< 0 0
< 5 9
< 10 19
< 15 49
< 20 73
< 35 85
(a) Calculate the mean, mode and standard deviation. [7]
(b) Hence, find the Pearson’s coefficient of skewness and comment on the shape of the
distribution. [3]

2. A school’s concert band comprises 24 woodwind players, n brass players and 10 percussion
1 2 4
players. of all woodwind players, of all brass players and of all percussion players are
3 5 5
Senior High students, while the rest are Junior High students.
One student from the concert band is selected at random.
(a) Find in term of n, the probability of selecting a brass player if he or she is a Senior High
student. [2]
(b) The probability of selecting a Senior High student or a percussion player but not both is
1
. Find the value of n. [3]
3
(c) Using the value of n found in (b), explain whether the event of selecting a Junior High
student is independent of the event of selecting a brass player. [2]

3. The cumulative distribution function of the time T, in minutes, of a student spends every morning
waiting for bus to school is given by
 0 ,t  0
 1 2
 t ,0  t  5
 75
F(t ) = 
 − 1 + 1 t − 1 t2 , 5  t  15
 2 5 150

 1 , t  15
(a) Find the probability density function of T. [3]
(b) Calculate the mean waiting time of the student. [3]

4. The number of white blood corpuscles on a slide has a Poisson distribution with parameter 0.6.
A random sample of 64 of such slide is taken.
(a) State the approximate distribution of the mean number of white blood corpuscles of
the sample. [2]
(b) Find the probability that the mean number of white blood corpuscles of the sample is
between 0.55 and 0.65. [3]
5. A manufacturer invented a new device to be attached to the engine of cars to improve fuel
consumption. A test is to be carried out to investigate the effect of the device on the rate of fuel
consumption of cars. The rate of fuel consumption is known to have a mean of 0 km per litre.
A random sample of 100 cars of a particular model was selected. The new device was attached
to the engines of the 100 cars and the rate of fuel consumption of these 100 cars are summarised
as follows :
 ( x − 16) = 173.4 and  ( x − 16)2 = 323.12
A statistical test is carried out at 8% level of significance and it is found that the device has no
impact on the rate of fuel consumption. Find the range of values of 0 [8]

6. In a particular town, a survey was conducted on a random sample of 200 residents aged 41 years
to 50 years. The survey questioned these residents to discover the age at which they had left full-
time education and the greatest rate of income tax that they were paying at the time of the
survey.
The summarized data obtained from the survey are shown in the table below.
Greatest rate of Age when leaving education (years)
income tax paid 16 or less 17 or 18 19 or more Total
Zero 32 3 4 39
Basic 102 12 17 131
High 17 5 8 30
Total 151 20 29 200
Use a  2 test, at the 5% level of significance, to investigate whether there is an association
between age when leaving education and greatest rate of income tax paid. [9]

Section B [15 marks]

Answer only one question in this section.

7. In a production process of flower vases, it is known that 4.5% of the flower vases are defective.
(a) Find the probability that, out of 5 flower vases, at most 2 are defective. [4]
(b) Determine the smallest number of flower vases, such that the probability that at least one
flower vase is defective is more than 0.9. [5]
(c) By using a suitable approximation, find the probability that, out of 200 flower vases,
more than 3 flower vases are defective. [6]

8. In a survey of a random sample of n electrical shops, it is discovered that 136 of

them sold televisions at below the list price recommended by the manufacturer.
(a) Determine the distribution of the proportion of all electrical shops selling below the
list price. [2]
(b) An approximate k% confidence interval for the proportion of shops that sell below
the list price is given by (0.301, 0.379).
(i) Explain what this interval means. [1]
(ii) Find the value of n. [3]
(iii) Show that k  90. [5]
(c) Determine the minimum sample size that would have to be taken in order to estimate
the proportion to within 3%, at a 90% level of confidence. [4]
