Verification of Max. Power Transfer Theorem
Verification of Max. Power Transfer Theorem
Experiment No:
EXP NAME:VERIFICATION OF MAXIMUM POWER TRANSFER THEOREM.
THEORY :
Maximum power transfer theorem as applied to D.C. circuit may be state as:
The theorem states that a resistive load connected to a dc network receives maximum power
when the load resistance is equal to the internal resistance of the source network as seen from the
load terminals.
Mathematically the power delivered to the resistive load is given by
PL=I2 RL= V2Th RL/(RTh+RL)2 …….(1)
Where Vth and Rth are Thevenin voltage and Thevenin resistance respectively. Now by adjusting
the value of RL , the maximum power can be delivered though R L if and only if
dPL/dRL =0
i.e. dPL/dRL =d/ dRL(V2nRL/RTh+RL)2=0
=V2Th(1/( RTh+RL)2 - 2RL/( RTh+RL)3)
= V2Th ( RTh-RL)/ ( RTh+RL)3
=0
Or, RTh-RL=0 since VTh≠0
Or, RTh=RL
It is thus clear that the maximum power is transferred to the load resistance when the load
resistance is equal to the internal resistance of the source network.
Hence value of maximum power Pmax= V2Th/4 RL
