HOW CAN WE PREVENT TEENAGE PREGNANCY?

INTRODUCTION

The Philippines teenage pregnancy rate has increased by 60% in the

year 2000- 2010, according to the Philippine National Statistics Office. This is very

alarming. Teenage pregnancy often occurs between the ages of 15-19 years old, often

in this age the girls are still studying.

There are two dimensions to teen pregnancies, both of which may coexist

in the same nation, developed or developing. High teen pregnancy rates may be caused

by premarital relations and unexpected pregnancy on the one hand, as well as by early

marriage and motherhood, which is a culturally accepted norm. Study suggests that

young people's sexual behavior patterns are changing, making early childbearing more

often a result of early sexual involvement. Urban areas seem to have this more

frequently than rural ones. In addition, a number of studies have noted a decline in the

age at menarche in both developed and developing nations.

Early pregnancy typically forces ladies to stop their schooling so they can

give birth or raise their child. Because it goes against the moral precepts of the school,

girls who fall pregnant are dismissed from school, especially in a Catholic institution like

Lourdes College, delaying their opportunity to earn a degree that will help them provide

for their kid. Education often takes a backseat until parents are able to leave their kids

at home and are financially secure. Nonetheless, there are females who simultaneously

study and care for their child; these women are known as student mothers. These girls'
burdens have increased because they also need to take care of their education as well

as their child at home.

We come up with this study because we noticed that some of the students in

TSHS were getting pregnant at such a young age. We want to provide awareness and

knowledge to the students of Talisay Senior High School to prevent teenage pregnancy.

In order to develop effective solutions, it is necessary to comprehend the

situation regarding teenage pregnancies in each country due to the elevated dangers of

early childbirth for both the mother and the child. Yet, getting trustworthy and accurate

data for analysis is not always simple, particularly in a developing nation. The Project

GABAY (Giving Awareness by providing an Action to prevent teenage pregnancy of

Young girls) aims to give awareness and give enough knowledge about teenage

pregnancy.

KEY CONCEPTS

Teenage Pregnancy. A pregnancy in a female adolescent or young adult

under

the age of 20.

Awareness. The knowledge or perception of a situation or fact.

Teenager. A person aged between 13 and 19 years

Talisay Senior High School. The school where the implementers,

respondents and program take place.

PURPOSE

The students should be aware of what is currently happening in the community and take

action to solve this kind of issue. It aims to help and give awareness to every student

with the following objectives:

1. To identify problems regarding early pregnancy

2. To initiate innovation on how to prevent early pregnancy in Talisay Senior

High School through implementing an awareness campaign program.

3. To instill to the mind of Talisay Senior High School students the value of

setting priorities and decision making skills with regards to their preferred

career.

PROCEDURE

This study used survey questionnaire as its data-gathering instrument. The researcher

drafted an instrument in accordance with the problem asked in the study with the

guidance of the adviser. After a series of revisions as pointed out by the researcher and

the adviser, the researcher finally drafted the instrument that served as the primary tool

in gathering the needed data in this study . This project will benefit not only the members

of the group, but it will also help the students at Talisay Senior High School become

aware about early teenage pregnancy. This project was conducted to provide the young

girls with enough knowledge about early pregnancy. The purpose of this project is to
help the students at Talisay Senior High School educate themselves, raise awareness,

and reduce early teenage pregnancy.
