PHYSICAL EDUCATION
QUARTER 4 – MODULE 1

MELC: Discusses the nature and background of indoor and outdoor recreational
activities.
Part I
A. Introduction
Recreation is a voluntary participation in an activity during free and unobligated time that
gives enjoyment. It refreshens one’s mind and body after a work. This module will help you choose
from both indoor and outdoor recreation that will surely bring you fun, fitness and fundamentals. So,
get off your feet and jump off to the world of ACTIVE RECREATION!

B. Discussion
The activities that you voluntarily participate in during your free time are called
RECREATION.
In choosing your recreational activities, it should:
1. Be of your interest and NOT of others.
2. Be voluntary and NOT pressured by somebody.
3. Meet your recreational satisfaction needs such as physiological, emotional, social, relaxation, and
aesthetics.

PASSIVE AND ACTIVE ACTIVITIES

 Activities that are less physically active or PASSIVE are activities that you don’t need to
exert extra effort and energy. The less physically active activities that you are into, bring
alarming effects to your health. Some examples include listening to music, reading books,
using cellphones, and others.
 Activities that require burning extra calories are called ACTIVE activities. It includes
running, biking, swimming, and other physical activities.

Recreation also embraces both INDOOR AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES. We consider

recreation as INDOOR when the activity is within the premises of your comfort zone at home or
inside a building while recreation is considered as OUTDOOR when the activity is undertaken in
a natural, rural or open space outside the confines of buildings, usually large land area that is
close to nature.

1
BENEFITS OF INDOOR AND OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES

 Playing indoor games regularly helps children improve their physical fitness. This is because
these activities incorporate a myriad of body movements. Researchers also believe that
children who engage in indoor physical activities more develop fast-twitch muscles, which
ultimately improves their reflexes.
 Taking part in recreational activities, especially outdoors, can greatly improve physical
health. People who take part in- park activities such as walking, hiking, or skiing, schedule
fewer office visits, maintain lower body fat percentages, and have lower blood pressure and
cholesterol levels.

C. Readings

Leisure and recreation have always been part of life. In the dark ages (a period between the 5th
and 15th Centuries), people were subjected to hard labor and bad weather, and there were many wars.
Leisure and recreation were mostly used to train people in certain skills such as the art of warfare. This is
according to the article “Leisure in the dark ages” by Chuck Chapa, a blogger, and researcher.

In the article “The History of Leisure and Recreation”, Gary Pearson, an author agrees with
Chapa’s assertion. However, Pearson says that even with the hardship of this period, many games such as
chess and checkers were developed. It is also during this time that Greeks invented the Olympics which
are now an important international event.

Ancient Egypt was very developed regarding leisure and recreation. This is according to the
article “History of Recreation” by the University of Manitoba. There was a well-developed class system
where the upper class liked to be entertained while the lower class participated in athletics and sports.
Children played with marbles, bouncing balls and other toys.

This is to say that the recreational games that you know and love today were created a long
time ago. Many studies show that most of the games originated from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome.
Swimming, running, ball games and board games were all developed by 641AD.

With the increase in technology, there have been many developments and additions to the list
of recreational activities. For instance, you can now play computer games and watch movies as a way to
relax and entertain yourself.

2
However, scientists continue to advocate for outdoor and physical recreation. While
computer and phone games might sound cooler than outdoor activities, they do not provide nearly as many
health, physical and social benefits as outdoor leisure and recreation activities do.

D. Examples

INDOOR RECREATION

The word billiard refers to any of

various games played on a cloth-
topped, cushion-railed rectangular
table by driving small, hard balls
against one another or into pockets,
with a long stick called a cue.
