Q1. The solid steel shaft shown below has two rotors mounted on the shaft has a weight 𝑊1 =
𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑑𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑡𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝐼𝐷 in 𝑁 equal to the last 3 digits of your student ID. If your
student ID is 201820218, then 𝑊1 = 2018 𝑁; 𝑊2 = 2 × 𝑊1 𝑁 ; 𝐸 = 210 𝐺𝑃𝑎; 𝜌 =
7850 𝑘𝑔⁄𝑚3. If the first critical speed should be no less than 4000 𝑅𝑃𝑀

Q2. A spring-loaded relief valve is shown in the figure below. The plunger that is mounted on the
main body covering the outlet opening, is held against the inlet opening by a helical compression
spring. When the force due to hydraulic pressure through inlet valve exceeds the initial setting of
the spring, the plunger is lifted up, allowing the oil to escape through the outlet valve. The spring
is to be designed for fatigue load (30 𝐻𝑧) as the plunger operates quite often.

The diameter of the plunger is 25 𝑚𝑚 and the outer diameter of the spring should not exceed
20 𝑚𝑚. The normal working pressure is 0.25 𝑁⁄𝑚𝑚2 and the valve opens at 1 𝑁⁄𝑚𝑚2 , with
a valve lift of 6 𝑚𝑚 from normal position. The spring is made of oil-hardened and tempered
valve spring wire of grade ASTM A229 (𝐺 = 81.7 𝐺𝑃𝑎). Assume square and ground end.

a) Choose a coil diameter (Washburn and Moen), 𝑑 ≥ 3.6 𝑚𝑚 and determine other design
parameters for the spring. [10 Marks]
b) Calculate the fatigue factor of safety as per Gerber fatigue failure with Zimmerli data for
unpeened material. [8 Marks]

22 May 2022 11:49 q1. A spring-loaded engine valve is shown in the figure below. The valve is held
against the inlet opening by a helical compression spring. The spring is to be
designed for fatigue load (30 𝐻𝑧) as the valve operates quite often.
The engine valve spring must exert a force of 300 𝑁 when the valve is closed
and 500 𝑁 when the valve is open with a compression of 8 𝑚𝑚 from closed
position. The spring is made of oil-hardened and tempered valve spring wire
of grade ASTM A229 (𝐺 = 81.7 𝐺𝑃𝑎). Assume square and ground end.
a) Choose a coil diameter (Washburn and Moen), 𝑑 ≥ 5.5 𝑚𝑚 and determine
other design parameters for the spring. [10 Marks]
b) Calculate the fatigue factor of safety as per Gerber fatigue failure with
Zimmerli data for unpeened material. [8 Marks]
