Jenifer I - They used three mixtures called Formulation 1, 2 and 3. After they put it on the seeds for
around six weeks (45 days), they saw which mixture worked best by measuring plant

RESEARCH VOLUME 3, ISSUE 1,
JANUARY 2014

Introduction :

The study is talking about fertilizers, which are things added to soil to help plants grow. There are
two types - organic and inorganic. Organic ones come from animal or plant sources like dried blood
or seaweed, while inorganic ones can be made by people or come from minerals found
underground. Fertilizers give the nutrients that plants need to grow well, but it's important not to use
too much of them because that can hurt the environment. The research also talks about using fruit
peels as a fertilizer for growing plants. Different kinds of fruit peels were tested and they helped
make the crops bigger and better.

Methodology :
Collection and processing of soil Sample collection Soil Quality Test –

The dirt was taken from a farm yard in the Ramanathapuram district of Kilakarai. Farmers seldom or
never crop soil, and it is not farmed for many years. The gathered dirt was stored in an open area of
the herbal garden. The soil typically contains clay, pebbles, roots, and rock fragments; these soils
are sieved with a 5mm sieve to remove the stones, roots, and rock fragments. The gathered dirt was
broken apart and put into several pots. Each container is filled with 4 kg of soil. The soil samples
were air-dried, and the dry soil was crushed using a wooden mortar pestle, taking care not to break
stones, concretions, or roots. This dried dirt was placed in sterile polythene bags and delivered to
the Paramakudi soil quality center.

Fruit Peel Collection and Processing – Pomegranate, orange, sweet lime, and banana peels were obtained individually from Katharia and
Jothi fruit stores in Ramanathapuram. Fruit peels were properly rinsed with tap water to eliminate
any undesirable debris, including seeds. The washed peels were chopped into little [1-5 cm] pieces
and sun dried for 20 days. Individually powdered dried fruit peels were sieved and kept at room
temperature.

Comparative study of different fruit peel powder and fruit peel extract

Preparation of Fruit Peel Extract – To compare plant development, several formulations of fruit peel powder were utilized. Each
formulation was combined with varying amounts of water.

For the manufacture of the extract, 1g of pomegranate, orange, sweet lime, and banana peel
powder were blended well in 100 ml of distilled water. This mixture was swirled for three days with a
magnetic stirrer This was classified as F1. For the extraction, 3g of pomegranate, orange, sweet
lime, and banana peel powder were combined well in 300 ml of distilled water. This mixture was
swirled for three days with a magnetic stirrer. For the extraction, 6g of pomegranate, orange, sweet
lime, and banana peel powder was combined with 600 ml of distilled water and carefully stirred. This
mixture was swirled for three days with a magnetic stirrer.

Application of Fruit Peels Powder in Soil - Three fruit peel powder formulations were added to soil and well blended to ensure consistent
dispersion. For each formulation, a control and three replications were kept. After 15 days,
fenugreek seeds were planted in various containers. Every day, 100 seeds were sown in each pot,
and water was poured. After 45 days after inoculation, the results were noticed.

Testing of Different Plants by Using the After 45 days of seed inoculation, the right formulation was discovered. The appropriate formulation
Suitable – identified in the previous experiment was utilized to test several of the seeds such as rice, mustard,
and rye. To control the growth of rice, mustard, and rye, soil was added with a specific composition.
Replication and control were preserved.

Preparation of Media and Explants – Scientists wanted to test if fruit peels could help plants grow. They used orange, sweet lime, and
banana peel powder mixed with water and put it in a flask that was heated up then cooled down.
Then they took Vinca rosea shoots (part of the plant) and cleaned them well before putting them on
the powdered mixture. Some had extra hormones added while others didn't as control group. They
kept everything at a certain temperature for 15 days before checking results under light bulbs made
by Phillips company from Mumbai, India. The results showed a significant difference between the
two groups.

Results :

Control soil, fruit peel fertilized- both powder and extract applied soil samples were evaluated for soil
nutritive properties. Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and K (Potassium) were the most often detected
elements. Soil fertility is improved following the use of three distinct formulations in soil.

Comparative Study of different Fruit Peel In this experiment, the researcher used fruit peels to make soil better for growing a plant called
Powder and Fruit Peel Extract Fruit Peel fenugreek. They tried different combinations of fruit peel powder and measured how tall the plants
Powder - grew after 45 days. The plants in the fertilized soil with fruit peel were taller than those without it.
They also had bigger leaves and produced more vegetables earlier than other plants that didn't have
any fruit peels added to their soil.

The experiment mentioned earlier demonstrated that Formulation 1 was determined to be more
suited. Other crops, such as mustard (Brassica juncea), rice (Oryza sativa), and rye (Secale
cereale), were also studied to determine how Formulation 1 affected them. The plant growth
outcome was recorded after 30 days. In testing, better growth was found when compared to the
control soil

Fruit Peel Extract's Inhibitory Effect - This experiment was carried out utilizing the agar well diffusion method to determine the inhibitory
effects of fruit peel extract on soil microorganisms. Depicts the diffusion of fruit peel extract on
nutrient agar but does not depict the inhibitory action. After 24 hours, a little pinch of culture was
taken from the well and streaked on a fresh nutrient agar plate to confirm the zone of inhibition.
Plates revealed the presence of microorganisms close to the well.

Enumeration of Microorganisms by Pour The researchers performed an experiment to see how many tiny living things were in soil. They used
Plate Technique - a special method called the pour plate technique and put different fruit peel extracts on the soil. Then
they counted how many colonies of microorganisms grew after 24 hours on petri dishes with nutrient
agar. Formulation 1 had the most growth compared to other formulations, which means it helped
more microorganisms grow.
As a trial, shoots were propagated in vitro to test the fruit peel powder for plant development.
Pomegranate was removed from the fruit peel powder, and orange, sweet lime, and banana peel
powder were utilized for media preparation. Since the peel of the Pomegranate was high in phenols.
Phenols reduced plant growth for callus induction. As a result, pomegranate peel powder was
omitted. New branches grew from the internodal area of explants after 15 days of incubation.

Discussion :

Fertilizers are materials added to soil to help plants grow. Chemical fertilizers can harm water, but
fruit peels have been shown to make soil better and healthier for plants because they contain
important nutrients like potassium, vitamins, minerals and essential elements which help the growth
of new microbes in the soil. Some types of fruit peel also kill harmful worms that damage plant roots.
Studies show that using powder or extract from these peels on crops increases their yield (how
much food is produced) while keeping leaves green until harvest time.
This research suggests that we should use more fruit peel as a natural fertilizer instead of chemicals
- it's good for both our environment and agriculture.
