Grade: III Subject: Science

Quarter: 1st Week No: 1 Day 1

I. OBJECTIVES
Content Standard The learners demonstrate the understanding of ways of
sorting materials and describing them as solid, liquid, or
gas based on their observable properties
Performance Standard The learners should be able to group common objects
found at home and in school according to solids, liquids
and gas
Learning Competency Describe different objects based in their
characteristics (e.g. Shape, Weight, Volume, Ease of
flow)
S3MT-Ia_b_1
Knowledge Identify the different solids around us.
Skills Name solids according to their observable
characteristics.
Attitude Show safety measures in handling different objects.

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preparatory Activities
Place objects inside the box. Place the box on the table.
Let somebody get one object from the box and let
him/her identify. Then say something to describe the
object. Call another pupil to do the same. At least five
pupils to identify objects in the box.
(Possible objects in the box, ruler, paper, coin, face
towel, biscuit, sharpener, pair of scissors)

B. Motivation
Below are the solid things you can see inside our
classroom. Identify and tell something about each.

(Ans. In the picture, pupils will see table, chair, bag,

sharpener, pair of scissors, eraser, notebook, etc.
Pupils may tell something about the size, the color, the
shape and other descriptions of each object.)
C. Activity Group the pupils into 3. Give each group task to do.
Group 1-Learning Station A
Group 2-Learning Station B
Group 3-Learning Station C
Explain the safety measures in handling objects if ever
they are going to touch them to prevent accidents and
not to get hurt.
Before you perform the task, please read the
safety precautions before, during, and after the
activity.
1. Be careful in handling the materials.
2. Be sure to do the activity with
supervision of your teacher.
3. Use the materials with care for the
purpose for which it is intended.
4. Carefully follow the procedures.
Do the following:
1. Each group will list five different solids they see in
their assigned learning stations.
2. Observe the solids and tell something about
them.
3. Present the activity cards to the class.
See Attachment A for the charts.
D. Analysis The teacher will let one representative from each group
to discuss their work. Use the charts of each group to
process the activity results.
Ask the following questions:
a. What objects did you listed in your station?
(See Attachment A for the answers)
b. How did you identify the objects?
(Ans. By looking at them)
c. Are they the same? Why?
(Ans. No. They have different characteristics.)
How can you classify objects based on their
characteristics?
(Ans. by looking at them)

E. Abstraction The teacher will discuss further on the things the pupils
saw in the different stations and their characteristics.
Ask:
1. Can you describe the objects?
(Answers may vary: Ex. The pencil is short, the
lesson plan is big, the plate is round, and the
paper clips are yellow.)
2. What are your observations on the solids?
(Answers may vary: Ex. The objects have colors,
sizes, of different shapes.)
3. Can you tell if these solids are hard, soft, rough,
smooth, round, square, colored, black, and
white? How can you tell?
(Ans. No, when we touch the objects, then we
can tell if they are hard or soft, rough or soft.
Yes, by looking at the objects, we can tell if the
objects are round or square, colored yellow or
red, black or white.)
4. Did you touch the solids? Are these solids of the
same color? Size? Shape? Are they different?
Will you give example?
(Ans. No, we did not touch the solids. Some
paper clips have green color, others are yellow.
There are short and long pencils. We saw round
and square plates.)
Note: Responses of pupils will be used by the
teacher to briefly review colors, sizes, and
shapes. Emphasize that texture is also one of the
characteristics of solids. They will have to touch
the solids to be able to tell whether they are
rough or smooth.

F. Application Look at the pictures below. Identify the solid in each

group then write at least two characteristics for each.

See Attachment B

G. Practical Applications of
Concepts and Skills in
Daily Living List down 5 solid materials used at home. Describe each
material as to color, size, texture and shape.

(Possible answers:
1. cabinet- brown, rectangle, smooth, big
2. wall clock- round, black & white, small, smooth
3. mirror- brown edge, oblong, smooth, big
4. television- black, rectangle, big, smooth
5. foot mat- green, rectangle, rough, small)

H. Generalization Solids maybe described in terms of color, size, shape,

texture and weight. We use our senses in identifying
objects based on their characteristics. We can find
various solids in our environment.

I. Evaluation Below are pictures of solids. Name them and give

two characteristics for each solid.
See Attachment C
J. Additional activities for
application or
remediation Draw five solids materials found at your kitchen. Give at
(assignment) least three characteristics for each according to its color,
size and shape.

V. REMARKS

solve?
What innovation or localized
did I use/discover which I
wish to share?
