COMMUNICATION CONFIGURATION

General
The aircraft communications systems consists of both basic and optional
features as listed below:

Basic
Dual VHF Systems for two way voice communication designated VHF 1 and VHF
2. Static discharging system to reduce radio noise interference due to corona
discharge.

Audio integrating including a central audio system.

Service Interphone System

Passenger Address System and intercommunication facilities for cabin crew are
provided at the front and rear vestibules with handsets at each position.
Loudspeakers are installed throughout the passenger cabin with additional
loudspeakers in the toilets.

Audio Monitoring using a cockpit voice recorder (CVR).

Optional

VHF System designated VHF 3, used for ACARS or a third voice

communication system.

ACARS addressable data link system with voice communication facility.

Single or Dual HF system for two way voice communication, designated HF 1 or

HF 2.
SELCAL system for automatic selective calling which continuously monitors
VHF 1, 2, 3 and HF 1 & 2 communications systems.

Emergency Locator transmitter (ELT) to alert and guide rescue services in

the event of a crash landing.

AUDIO INTEGRATING SYSTEM
The audio integrating system provides a
microphone, telephone and loudspeaker facilities
for the radio communication and navigation
systems installed in the aircraft. The system
includes crew communication, passenger address,
service interphone, an audio input to the CVR, and
an interface with VHFCOMM, HF COMM, if fitted,
VHF NAV, DME, ADF, marker and audio warnings.
The Central Audio Unit (CAU) located in the
avionic rack, provides amplification and, together
with other units in the system, control and
distribution of all audio warnings.
A audio control panel is provided for each pilot:
• transmit buttons which are interconnected
• push-on, push-off receive buttons which rotate
for audio level adjustment.
• an R/T-INT switch – spring loaded from the R/T to
OFF position.
• a BOOM/MASK selector – which selects either
boom or mask microphones.
• an INT button which selects service interphone.
04/19/04 23
• A TEST A-B button

•\ A VOICE button which screens out the ident signals from the NAV and ADF
receiver to leave the voice signals.
Each crew member has a BOOM/MIC and HEADPHONE jack socket, and an INT-R/T
switch on the handwheel. A loudspeaker and associated switch is above each pilot.
The switch controls the audio input to the loudspeaker but not the audio warnings
which are preset and cannot be switched off.
Selecting MASK on the audio
Control Panel overrides the switch
and turns on the speaker.
An intercom facility and audio
control panel are provided as
options for the third crew member.

The installation comprises a VHF Transceiver,
controller and antenna. Audio and keying
facilities are provided by the audio integrating
system. Controller and antenna location vary
POWER SUPPLIES with build standard.

MDC ……… VHF 1 Cooling is through the avionics forced cooling

system.
DC 2 ……… VHF 2
The frequency range selectable in 25kHz
DC 1 ……… VHF 3 (If Fitted) increments is:
118.000 MHz to 135.975 MHz or
118.000 MHz to 136.975 MHz

HF COMMUNICATIONS
Single or dual HF system can be fitted as options. Each installation comprises a HF
transceiver, controller and an antenna coupler with associated accessories.
HF 1 & HF 2 are monitored by a selective calling system (SELCAL).
HF 1 is powered by Avionics Master A switch. HF 2 is powered by Avionics Master B
switch. The audio integrating system must be operational before the HF
communication system is available.
A 15 second warm-up period is required for stable frequency operation.
There are three different HF systems that can be fitted to the BAe 146 series of
aircraft:
Collins 628T-1
Collins 628T-2A (Description in Program)
Collins HFS 700

04/19/04 26
HF Controller
The HF communication System enables two
telephone communications over a frequency
range of 2.000 to 29.9999 MHz. Any one of
280,000 channels spaced at 0.1 kHz intervals
is available for selection.
The HF control units are installed on the
center console and incorporates the following
controls:
Frequency Selector – Five knobs which permit
selection oh MHz on whole numbers and to
four decimal places.
Function Selector – Six position switch including OFF. The USB and LSB settings permit use of
the upper or lower sideband of the selected frequency. The AM function provides full wave
operation.
RF SEN control – provides RF gain control
Signal level may be adjusted using the RF SEN knob which varies signal to noise ratio. Audio
level is adjusted at the audio control panel.

Service Interphone System

The service interphone system enables

communications between the cockpit, cabin and
ground personnel using service jack boxes
located around the aircraft.
A boom mic or handset can be connected into the
service interphone system by selecting SER INT on
the audio control panel.

The forward cabin attendant’s intercom panel is

furnished with a handset, an INT select switch and an
INT VOL control. With INT selected and PA
deselected, the handset is connected to the four
ground service jack panels and the flight crew.

The PA System facilitates announcements to the

cabin, toilets and attendant’s panels. Electronic
chimes, initiated by crew call, attendant’s call and
the NO SMOKING and FASTEN SEAT BELTS
switches are also produce by the PA system. A
PA by the cockpit overrides all other PA
transmissions and PA from any station overrides
service interphone.
A noise sensor is installed in the passenger
cabin. It is a microphone which converts cabin
noise into an electrical signal which the CAU
processes to control the output of the PA
amplifier.
