Answer all the questions in this section

1. Evaluate

2. Given that log 3 = 0.4771 and log 5 = 0.6990 evaluate the following without

using tables or a calculator.

(a) Log 135 ( 1 mark )

(b) Log 1125 ( 2 marks )

3. A seven sided polygon has two of its interior angles 1400 and 1600, and the remaining

angles are equal. Find the size of one of the equal angles. (3 marks )

4 I owe a certain American financier US$10000.He has given me the option of paying
through my account in Kenya or through my account in the UK. Find which option is
cheaper, and by how much (in shillings),given that the prevailing exchange rates are:

1 US$ dollar = 81.3389 Kenya shillings

1 Sterling pound = 151.0151 Kenya shillings

1US dollar = 0.5388 Sterling pounds.

5. The volumes of two similar cylinders are 4752cm3 and 1408cm3. If the area of the
curved surface of the smaller cylinder is 352cm2, find the area of the curved surface of
the larger cylinder (3mks)

7 Find the equation of a straight line which is equidistant from the points A(2,3) and B
(6,1) (3mks)

8 Using ruler and compasses only construct an acute angled triangle ABC such that <ABC
= 450, BC = 9cm and AC = 7cm. Locate appoint x in triangle ABC such that x is
equidistant from A, B and C. Measure AX, (4mks)

9. Use mathematical tables to evaluate. (4mks)

10. A piece of land is to be divided into 20 acres or 24 acres or 28 acres for farming and
leave 7 acres for grazing. Determine the smallest size of such land. (3mks)

11. Given that OA = 2i – 3j and OB = -4i + j. Find the magnitude of the vector AB giving
your answer correct to 4 significant figures. ( 3 marks)

12. The angle of depression of a boat at a point B for the top of a cliff is 300. The boat moves
to a point A 100m nearer to the foot of the cliff than B. the angle of depression of A from
the top of the cliff is 600. Calculate to 2 decimal places the height of the cliff. ( 3 marks).

13 A swimming pool measures 14m by 10m. A path of uniform width x meters is made
round the pool. Given that the area of the path is 112 m, calculate the width of the path.
(3 marks).

14. The data below shows the mass for a group of students in a school. Represent the data on
a histogram. ( 3 marks)

16. a) Sketch the net of the rectangular – based right pyramid below given that AB = DC =
4cm and BC = AD = 3cm and VA=VB=VC= VD= 5 cm. ( 2marks)

Answer all the questions in this section
17. A bus left Nakuru at 9.00 a.m and travelled towards Kisumu at an average speed of 80km/hr.
At 9.30 a.m a car left Kisumu for Nakuru at an average speed of 120 km/hr. Given that the
distance between Nakuru and Kisumu is 400km calculate :

a) The time the car arrived at Nakuru. ( 2 marks)

b) The time the two vehicles met. ( 4 marks)

c) The distance from Nakuru to the meeting point. ( 2 marks)

d) The distance of the bus from Kisumu when the car arrived at Nakuru. ( 2 marks)

18. Town B is 500 km due east of town A. Town C is on a bearing of 0300 from A
and 3150 from town B. Town D is 200 km on a bearing of 3000 form town C.

b) Using the scale diagram in (a) above, find

19. A sector of a circle of radius 40cm subtends an angle of 126o at the centre of the circle.

b) The sector is folded to form an inverted right cone. Calculate :


i) The base radius of the cone. ( 2 marks)
