THE RAM AIR PROGRESSION SYSTEM (RAPS)

INTRODUCTION

The RAIIS system has been devised as an improvement on the conventional parachute course. The
main featute of the training is that a high performance canopy is used from the outset. This has the
following advantages:
'1. The same equipment is used from Cat. 1 to Cat. 8. No change in system, no change in
reserve drills
2. Higher permissible surface windspeeds (18 mph); more chances to jump, less hanging
around
3. Landings much softer
4. More fun to fly
5. Small courses; personalised instruction

COURSE SUMMARY

Equipment
The main canopy: 9 cell Manta, 288 sq ft area
Forward speed 20 mph
Steered by YELLOW toggles on rear risers
De-tuned -- cannot be stalled
Operated by static line and direct bag

The reserve canopy: 7 cell Sharpchuter, 240 sqft area

Forward speed 20mph
Steered by RED toggles on rear risers
Operated by ripcord, RSL or AAD

Aircraft drills and exits

These are taught and practised according to the type of aircraft to be used. Static line exit height
is 3,500ft AGL.

Flight drills and canopy control

The following sequence is to be carried out on all jumps:
1. Check canopy
2. Release brakes
3. Pump down slider if necessary
4. Check all-round for other canopies - steer away if necessary
5. Locate DZ; fly canopy toDZ; check altimeter

Then carry out handling exercises as follows:

1. Full brakes; do it twice
2.360 degree left and right spirals; check altimeter
3. Half brakes - tack right and left across wind line towards target area

At L000 feet set up landing pattern:

1. 1000ft - downwind leg approx 200 metres to the side of the target (See Fig. 1)
2. 500ft - crosswind (base) leg
3. 300ft - final approach INTO WIND; no late turns
4. 100ft - full drive
5. L0ft - (approx) flare for toudrdown; FEETTOGETHER

Malfunctions and reserve drills

There are two categories of malfunction - TOTAL and PARTIAL. In the event of any malfunction,
the following unified drills must be carried out IMMEDIATELY:

TOTAL LOOK at cutaway pad and reserve handle

(container remains closed) LOCATE cutaway pad and reserve handle; right hand on
pad and left hand on reserve handle with thumb
hooked inside
PARTIAL CUTAWAY PEEL ctrtaway pad velcro from bottom
(Lineover, streamer, PUNCH cutaway pad down to arm's length
badly torn canopy) RESERVE PULL reserve handle with left hand
ARCH! !!

The following nuisance factors do NOT require cutaway action:

Twists Kick out

Closed end cells Pump brakes
Sliderup, canopy open Pumpbrakes
Premature brake release Release other brake
Broken steering line Steer onrear risers

Progessionjtmps

The BPA Category system is followed the RAI'S freefall opening height is 3000ft AGL. Students
are introduced to a hand deploy (throwaway pilot chute) at Cat 8.
