2. Monitoring a sick patient can be a delicate balancing act. Although the patient needs
uninterrupted sleep to aid with recovery, medical staff must also regularly check vital signs
such as temperature and blood pressure. The two needs are not always fine bedfellows.
Four scientist have come up with a solution: a wireless gadget called “Smart Sense”, which
is now being used in hospitals of Singapore, Bangkok, Taipei and the Middle East. The 1.2
inch wide SmartSense is taped to a patient’s body to continuously measure vital signs.
Radio frequency technology then transfers the data wirelessly via ceiling mounted
transmitters to computers in the nurse station.
The inspiration for the idea came out of a coffee break conversation between two
colleagues. One of them had a sick child and said he and his wife were waking the infant
every two hours through the night to record her temperature. This made him think of an
automated wireless sensing system to monitor baby’s temperature so that both parents and
child can enjoy uninterrupted sleep. The idea evolved into SmartSense.
With the help of this device nurses can dispense with the task of manually checking
patient’s temperature without disturbing patients. Moreover, SmartSense cuts down on any
possibility of human error and reduces work load of medical staff. Doctors can also view
data via wifi enabled digital assistants or on PCs. Another bonus to introducing this system
into crowded wards is that it will allow fast tracking of patients in clusters that are
developing fever at the same time. At a time of growing incidences of hospital acquired
infections, this is an important early warning signal. The device aims to enhance patient
care by measuring vital medical data and transmitting it to health practitioners.
Based on the provided information would you fund this idea? Why? Why not? Explain
your answer. [15]
3. As leaders of tomorrow, future engineers and responsible citizens, how do you understand
the impact of your choices and decisions on those around you? Reflect on one negative and
one positive choice and decision from your life and the impact it has had on your
surroundings. Minimum: 300 words. [20]
