INDE 421 LAB REPORT-3

Workstation 1:
1)The lifting equation is an appropriate tool to evaluate this job.
L
2) LI =
RWL

The weight actually lifted is 20kg in this workstation.

RWL=(LC )( HM )(VM )( DM )( AM )(FM )(CM )

LC= 23kg
HMorigin = 25/Horigin = 25/62 = 0.40
HMdestination = 25/Hdestination = 25/62 = 0.40
V origin = 1-(0.003 |V-75|= 1-0.003*|(14-75)|= 0.82

V destination =¿ 1-0.003*(90-75)= 0.96

DM =¿(0.82+(4.5/D) = 0.82+(4.5/76) =0.88

AM= 1 because A=0

FM= 0.91 (from table 3.15)
CM =1.00 ( GOOD )

RWLOrigin = 23(0.40)(0.82)(0.88)(1)(0.91)(1) = 6.04

RWLdestination = 23(0.40)(0.96)(0.88)(1)(0.91)(1) = 7.04
LIorigin = 3.31
LIDestination = 2.84
3) The highest LI is bigger than 3 which means that the task should be revised as
the lifting index exceeded the MPL.
4) The components that need improvement are: HM and DM (considerably less
than 1)
5) Some useful modifications to the workplace include bringing the load closer to
the worker and reducing the vertical distance between the origin and destination
of the lift.
Workstation 2:
1)The lifting equation is an appropriate tool to evaluate this job.
L
2) LI =
RWL

The weight actually lifted is 16kg in this workstation.

RWL=(LC )( HM )(VM )( DM )( AM )(FM )(CM )

LC= 23kg
HMorigin = 25/Horigin = 25/45 = 0.56
HMdestination = 25/Hdestination = 25/80 = 0.31
V origin = 1-(0.003 |V-75|= 1-0.003*|(14-75)|= 0.82

V destination=¿ 1-0.003*(92-75) = 0.95

DM =¿(0.82+(4.5/D) = 0.82+(4.5/78) =0.88

AM= 1 because A=0

FM= 0.72 (from table 3.15)
C M origin=0.95 ( FAIR )

CMdestination = 1.00
RWLOrigin = 6.36
RWLdestination = 4.30
LIorigin = 2.52
LIDestination = 3.72
3) The highest LI is bigger than 3 which means that the task should be revised as
the lifting index exceeded the MPL.
4) The components that need the most improvement are HM and FM.
5) In order to make the task acceptable, it is highly advised to remove the
horizontal barriers to bring the load closer and reducing the frequency rate
and/or the lifting duration
Workstation 3
1) The lifting equation is an appropriate tool to evaluate this job.
L
2) LI =
RWL

The weight actually lifted is 10kg in this workstation.

RWL=(LC )( HM )(VM )( DM )( AM )(FM )(CM )

LC= 23kg
HMorigin = 25/Horigin = 25/55 = 0.45
HMdestination = 25/Hdestination = 25/55 = 0.45
V M origin= 1-(0.003 |V-75|= 1-0.003*|(13-75)|= 0.81

V M destination=¿1-0.003*(85-75) = 0.97

DM =¿(0.82+(4.5/D) = 0.82+(4.5/72) =0.88

AM= 1-0.0032 * 90 = 0.71

FM= 0.27 (from table 3.15)
C M =1.00 ( GOOD )

RWLOrigin = 1.41
RWLdestination = 1.69
LIorigin = 7.09
LIDestination = 5.92
3) The highest LI is bigger than 3 which means that the task should be revised as
the lifting index exceeded the MPL.
4) The components that need the most improvement are HM, AM and FM.
5) If we want to reduce the LI, we could bring the load closer to the worker or
reducing its size, move the origin and destination of the lift closer together to
reduce the angle of twist, and reduce the lifting frequency rate and/or the lifting
duration.
Workstation 4
1. Since this lift is single handed, the NIOSH lifting equation does not apply,
and therefore should not be used as a tool to evaluate this job. Instead, we
can use other tools such as static Strength prediction models, RULA…
