FIRE
BUILDING
A Guide to keep you safe, light, and warm.

Presentation By: Dessa Lynne Romero

FIRE BUILDING

Fire building is beneficial and must be learned

when doing outdoor activities. Building a campfire
provides light and warmth, and heat for cooking.
It can also serve as a beacon and an insect and
predator deterrent.

Reminder:
"Building a fire from a natural source is allowable
only in case of emergency or if it is allowed in the
campsite."
LET'S LEARN ABOUT

FIRE BUILDING
PROCEDURE
1. GATHER

To burn a successful fire,

you’ll need three types of
fuel: tinder, kindling, and
fuel/firewood.
2. BUILD

You will build the fire by

adding kindling wood to
the burning tinder and
adding fuel to the fire as it
grows.

3. TINDER

It is from dead twigs

found on the lower
branches of trees and
shrubs that snap off easily
when bent. Never use
branches or woods that
are still green in color.
4. KINDLING

It should be dry. You must

not gather wet wood from
the forest floor. Rather,
look for branches that are
dead and down, not on the
tree.
5. FUEL/FIRE WOOD

It should be dry also, split

larger pieces of wood if
possible. And a good-sized
stack on hand before you
light the fire.
