Characteristics of displacement current

1. The displacement current is the current only in the sense that it produces a magnetic field. It has
none of the other properties of the current since it is not linked with the motion of charges.
2. In serves the purpose to make the total current continuous across the discontinuity in the
conduction current. As an example, a battery charging a capacitor produces a close current loop
in terms of total current I(total)=I (Conduction)+I(Displacement)
3. Displacement current in a good conductor is negligible compared to conduction current at any
frequency less than optical frequencies (approx. 10^15 Hz)

Difference between Conduction current and displacement current

1. Conduction current is equal to the rate of change of charge. On the other hand, the displacement
current depends on the rate of change of electric field strength.
2. Displacement current has a finite value in the perfect vacuum, but the conduction current is
always zero for perfect vacuum.
