LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Reading Academic Texts
(Outlining)

LEARNING COMPETENCY
CS_EN11/12A-EAPP-Ia-c-4&8
The learner outlines reading texts in various disciplines

BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT THE TOPIC

An outline is a map or a skeleton of one’s writing or any reading text . Its basic parts are the thesis statement
or topic sentence, the supporting sentences and if the author wants to discuss further, he or she includes sub
supporting ideas too.

These three parts go hand-in-hand across the stages of writing and there are three stages of it, namely:
Pre-writing Stage, Writing Stage and Post Writing or the Revision/Editing Stage. Preferably, Outlines are written
during the pre-writing stage instead of the post-writing so as to prepare the path to where an author’s writing is
directed.
We have already discussed about Topic Sentence and Text Structure which are very important in reading text
critically and for this part of the module we will further tackle about Outlining.

This is where our discussion will revolve, and we will answer the following questions:
 How does one outline;
 What is the most common format; and
 How may it be applied in reading texts?

The template below is an example of a standard outline. Take note that the outline template given is only
intended for the short passage. As we further discuss, I will give you longer example of a text with its outline.

ACTIVITY NO. 1
INSTRUCTIONS: Read and analyze the short passage below. Answer the questions that follow. Write
your answers on the space provided for each number.

What is love? How can one define it? Love is defined by a lot of things. But did you know
that there are different types of it? There are at least 6 types of love. One, is Philia which means a
kind of love that occurs with friends, families, brothers and sisters. Second is Pragma which means
enduring love. This kind of love is able to overcome any type of obstacle or struggles. Next is,
Storge which is love for family. The bond we make with them is called that kind of love. Eros is the
fourth one which is very familiar to everyone because it means romantic love. The fifth is Philautia
which means self-love. This type of love focuses on one’s ability to take or him or herself not to the
point of selfishness. And the last one which is said to be the strongest type of love is Agape. This
means a selfless kind of love. A love that surpasses all things which can only be found in putting
another than one’s self. What is love for you? No matter what it is, love is a beautiful thing.

ACTIVITY NO. 2

INSTRUCTIONS: Read and analyze the passage below entitled “Spiderman Far from Home: Movie Review”.
Examine its Outline and answer the questions below about the passage. Write your answer on the space provided
before the number.

Spiderman: Far from Home

(Movie Review)
Spiderman Home Coming, the reboot of the Spiderman Franchise had hit millions of dollars. Tom Holland, being
the third or fourth Spiderman on-screen, had landed one of the main characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at a very
young age. And its sequel has finally arrived: Spiderman Far from Home. In here we see a different side of Peter Parker
compared to the first part of the film where he’s always excited about being involved in any of the avenger’s mission. But in
this movie, he is mostly not. More so, because of Tom Holland’s superb acting, he caught the attention of many of its
viewers. The movie immediately captured the hearts of teens who are struggling with pressure, anxiety or depression of
some sort.
Peter Parker is my most liked character in the film not just because he is the main character but because of Tom
Holland’s acting all throughout the film. I relate to the part where Peter becomes very anxious about what the society is
putting on his shoulder, labeling him as the next Ironman. In the movie, we’d see him having series of panic attacks like what
Tony Stark had in the 3rd franchise of Ironman. A lot of people may relate to this since mental issues are now discussed and
studied worldwide.
I am also fond of MJ played by Zendaya. She is a woman of color who is really intelligent. It may seem that at the
middle of the movie she flirted with another character of the film but in reality, she really likes Peter. I love how Zendaya
portrayed such a strong role which sets the standard for teens of today.
And of course, the award-winning actor Jake Gyllenhaal who portrayed Mysterio, a skilled illusionist from a different
dimension in the multiverse, gave the movie a whole new twist when he, after dying, published a video revealing that
Spiderman is Peter Parker. It was also revealed that he has a huge anger issue to Tony Stark and I think is a little too crazy.
I was so stressed when I watched those scenes that I cannot wait for the 3rd franchise.
Though there are a lot of criticisms about the film, I still think this version of Spiderman is unlike the first two we had
because it talks about things that teens or the youth can relate to. Tom Holland brings it into a whole new level and I know
for a fact that he’s going to be the next RDJ as well. And Peter, MJ and Mysterio, movie fanatics just like me relate to them
because they symbolize something relevant in our lives.
