was successfully test-fired

officials said on Sunday.
The missile firing demon-

degree Celsius was recorded
at Jangamaheswarapuram
in coastal Palnadu district.
The highest temperature in
the 42- 430C range for the pa-

Nagamanikanta, a 23-year-old
from Nallakulavaripalem vil-
lage in Peravali mandal of
West Godavari district, died at
Tanuku railway station on
Sunday.
According to Tanuku railway
police, Manikanta was travel-
ling by Circar Express.
Manikanta slipped and fell off
the train while it was reaching
Tanuku station. He died on the
spot.
Circar Express had to stop
for 30 minutes for the body to
be removed.
Railway police have regis-
tered a case.

Nallapadu police of Guntur

sons in the case wherein two
women had to perform pujas
while being in the buff. Both
the two have been rescued fol-
lowing a call they made on the
Disha app.

Mahaboob Basha, Nageswara
Rao, the prime accused,
sought for a young woman
who would sit in the buff and
perform a puja. He offered `1
lakh in exchange.
Following this, accused num-
ber four V. Nagendrababu
passed on the information to
Suresh, who conveyed the
information to a girl. On May 8
night, the girl, Suresh, Kasim
and Pedda Reddy came to
Guntur by bus.
They called Nagendrababu,
who came with Aravinda and
Radha to Guntur in a car.
When they all met at the
Guntur bus stand, another girl
with Pawan and Sagar arrived
there. All of them stayed in a
lodge that night.
The next day, May 9, prime
accused Nageswara Rao
arrived with his assistants
Ravi, Subbu, Sunil and Shiva.
All the people then went to the
house of Nageswara Rao in
Ponnekallu village. There,
Nageswara Rao started the
puja with the two girls who
had to strip themselves bare.
It is stated that during the
puja the prime accused sexual-
ly harassed the two women
and tried to touch them inap-
propriately. As the two did not
agree, the puja was stopped.
The next day, all the accused
took the young women to
Aravinda's house in
Chilakaluripet, where they
started the puja again with the
two women going in the buff.
Nageswara Rao once again
sexually abused them. The
women then tried to run away
but were forcibly stopped by
the accused. Subsequently,
when the two women were
being again taken to Ponne-
kallu, one of them called on
the Disha app 112 while pass-
ing through Gorantla.
Nallapadu police immediately
intervened and rescued the
two women. Police took into
custody prime accused Nage-
swara Rao, Aravinda, Radha,
Nagendrababu, Bhaskar, Ped-
da Reddy, Sagar and others.

tion's Andhra Pradesh state
executive committee meeting
has demanded comprehensive
legislation against violence in
the medical profession. IMA-
AP state president Dr G. Ravi
Krishna and secretary Dr P.
Phanidhar said that the IMA
state executive meeting was
held at Guntur and expressed
concern over attacks on the
medical profession, which
were on the rise.
Dr Ravi Krishna said that it
was evident from the recent
incident in Kerala where a
young lady doctor, Dr Vandana
Das, was stabbed to death by a
prisoner whom she was treat-
ing, and it was a failure of the
police. He deplored that
despite some legislation for
the protection of medical pro-
fessionals, the implementation
was at fault; hence, IMA had
been demanding a comprehen-
sive law from the Central gov-
ernment.
Dr Phanidhar said that when
there was an allegation of
medical negligence against
any medical practitioner, the-
re were certain standard oper-
ating procedures that were to
be followed by the law-enforc-
ing department, which were
pronounced by various courts,
including the Supreme Court
of India. He said that IMA
demanded that a SOP should
be formulated and circulated
to all the police stations.
The IMA-AP thanked the AP
government for extending the
flagship programme
Aarogyasri to many more dis-
eases and requested that the
due amounts be released to the
network hospitals expediently
and in good amounts so that
they could meet their expendi-
ture. The IMA-AP leaders said
that the integrated medicine
that was being proposed by the
Central government on med-
ical education was a very
detrimental move by the gov-
ernment to integrate modern
medicine with the other sys-
tems of medicine.

An unequivocal verdict
for good governance
T
he decisive and emphatic electoral verdict in the Karnataka Assembly
election underscores the simple fact that politics and governance mat-
ter in this country and that attempts to introduce specious narratives
to cover up failures fall flat in front of an intelligent electorate.
The Congress, for a change, faced the election after rediscovering its place in
Indian polity as a centrist, liberal and unadulterated secular force. And the
BJP did everything possible to ensure that the Congress remained so. Of late,
the ruling party in one of the most happening states in India had on top of its
agenda ways to disturb the lives of a section of people and use it to polarise soci-
ety. The hijab, halal and the reservation for Muslims were such topics the BJP
thought will help it coast to victory in the elections.

regime leadership both
within the institutions of
the State and in the media.
While the government cor-
rupted the media with

and the pampering of the
faithful, self-censorship on
the part of many editors
and journalists became a
larger problem.
Journalists, especially in
television media, have
been willing to crawl when
asked to bend.
It is interesting to see the
reception on the social
media over the past few

and criticised openly.
Journalists who have
reduced themselves to pro-
pagandists must introspect
as to how much damage
they have done to their
own reputation and to that
of the profession. It
remains to be seen if pro-
fessionalism will assert
itself over partisanship
within the media.

come is the failure of Mr
Modi and the Sangh
Parivar to benefit from
their cynical deployment of
an appeal to religion and
the religious beliefs of ordi-
nary people to secure polit-
ical power. Not only was
history distorted to malign

priests invited to endorse
candidates, the Prime
Minister made a wholly
objectionable statement
asking Karnataka’s voters
to say “Jai Bajrangbali”
while pressing the button
on the voting machine.
This was perhaps the low-
est depth to which the com-
munalisation of the elec-
toral process had reached.
That the Karnataka voter
ignored such cynical
manipulation of their faith
is testimony to the essen-
tially secular character of
most Hindus, especially in
southern India.
We are seeing the long-
term social and economic
consequences of the cyni-
cal mixing of religion and
politics in Pakistan. Few
recall that the Pakistani
economy was ahead of

he opted for more liberal
politics, eschewing hard-
line Hindutva. Mr Modi’s
decade has not been a par-
ticularly impressive one in
terms of governance and
development despite the

national leadership of all
responsibility.
Finally, a more self-confi-
dent Congress Party will
have to tread the ground
carefully over the next
year if it wishes to regain
its national support base.
Its performance in the
states where it governs will
be one leg of its claim to
power in 2024. The other
leg would be pursuing
imaginative policies and
politics that restore hope to
a sullen middle class,
improve the social and eco-
nomic prospects of the
poor, revive the so-called
“animal spirits” of Indian
private enterprise and
regain India’s global
stature as a secular, liberal,
plural democracy.

strategist Sunil Kanugolu is
now heading for Madhya
Pradesh to chalk out a “win-
ning strategy” for the party in

here on Sunday that Kanugolu
may arrive in Madhya
Pradesh within a couple of
weeks to do a fresh poll survey
in the state before giving
shape to the final strategy for
the party.
“Kanugolu has already done
a survey in Madhya Pradesh
to identify the Congress’
strengths and weaknesses in
each of the 230 Assembly con-
stituencies in the state,
besides reviewing the win-
ning prospects of the sitting
Congress MLAs”, said a party

“Kanugolu is now heading
