Besides the limited amount of fertile land, there will be a great increase in the need for food and

In some countries as many as nine (36) out of ten adults read at least one newspaper a day.
Why do so many people (37) read newspapers?
There are five basic functions of a newspaper: to inform, to comment, to persuade, to instruct (38)
and to entertain. Of the two major categories of newspapers, the popular newspaper and
the quality newspaper, the (39) former has millions of readers while the latter, only
hundreds of thousands. Yet the popular papers seem largely designed (40) for
entertainment. Their new coverage contains a lot of comment. The quality newspapers put a much
higher value on factual information (41) than on entertainment. It is not only in
content that the two types of papers differ, (42) but also in the style in which the articles
are written. The popular papers generally use more dramatic language with bigger headlines and
more photographs. Their journalists tend to use shorter sentences and avoid less well-known
vocabulary. Since the popular newspapers (43) have a large readership than the more
neutral quality newspapers, it may be fair to conclude (44) that the average readers not
only want to be entertained (45) by a newspaper, but also prefer their reading to be guided
and opinions given to them.

questions: “Why are people so unhappy? How can people be happy?” When he was 29 years old, he
left his family, his beautiful wife and son and went out into the world to find the answers. He tried
many ways. He studied with teachers but they could not answer his questions. He went to live in the
forest. He hurt his body. He did not eat anything for many days. He tried to get away from his body.
But this did not give him the answers to his questions. Then he set down under a tree and thought.
He sat for 49 days. After this time, he learned something from himself. He became the Buddha. His
questions were answered. People were unhappy because they want things. They are looking for
food, money and other things. When a man does not want things, then he will be happy. When a

Man is only just beginning to realize how much he must look to the sea. It can be important source
of food for millions of people in the world. When we know how much and in what way the oceans
influence the weather, we can plan the growing of crops and even work out the best time to take our
holidays. But when we get to the bottom of the sea we find things that no one dreamed existed
recently. Lands which were covered with water when the ice melted at the end of the Ice Age are
rich in minerals. Off the South African coasts, for example, in a place where there are five times the
number of diamonds as in the mines on the land. Oil is brought from the bottom of the Caspian Sea.

For many years people believe that the cleverest animals after man were chimpanzees. Now,
however, there is proof that dolphins may be even cleverer than these big apes. Although a dolphin
lives in the sea it is not a fish. It is a mammal. It is, in many ways, like human being. Dolphins have
simple language. They are able to talk to one another. It may be possible for man to learn how to

14

talk to dolphins. But this will not be easy because dolphin cannot hear the kind of sounds man can
make. If man wants to talk to dolphins, therefore, he will have to make a third language which both

In 1911 a penniless young music-hall artist left England for America. His future was uncertain, but

East End and had experienced great poverty. His mother’s life had been so hard that she had finally
gone mad, and his father had died of drinking. Both parents had been on the stage and lived in the
hope that they would one day be stars. Their son was determined to succeed where they had failed.
By 1914 his optimism and determination had been justified. Charles Chaplin was the most talked-

about man in America, the King of silent movies. He was not only admired as a first-class actor and
comedian, he was also making his name as a director. How did he reach the top of the film world in

who were popular at that time were a failure. However he gradually began to develop the character
of the tramp that will always be connected with his name. He borrowed ideas from many sources
and though he “stole” most of his clothes from other slapstick comedians of the time, he developed
his own special mannerisms to go with them. He used his bowler hat to signal secret messages and
his walking stick allowed him to cause confusion and punish his enemy from a distance. He got the

We had an English upbringing in terms of plenty of fresh air and outdoor games. I didn’t go to
school. My whole formal education consisted of some three hours when I was five. I was sent to
school but came home at noon on the first day and said I didn’t enjoy it. I couldn’t see the point of a
lot of children sitting restlessly while a teacher taught from a big book. My parents decided, wisely,
I think, that school was not for me and I never went back. My mother then took over my education
and brought up my two sisters and me rather in the way of an educated English lady. The emphasis
was on languages and reading rather than sciences and maths. Sometimes she taught us herself, but
we also had other teachers and we were kept to a strict routine. About once a week we walked to the
Golden Gate Park, and on our walks my mother taught me to read music. One day I noticed a little
windmill in the window of a shop we passed on our way to the park and I remember now how my
heart yearned for it. I couldn’t roll my ‘r’s when I was small and my mother, who was a
perfectionist regarding pronunciation, said if I could pronounce an ‘r’ well, I’d have the windmill. I
practiced and practiced and one morning I woke everybody up with my’r’s. I got the windmill. I
usually get things I want in life - but I work hard for them and dream of them.

to live longer in mountainous areas. The mountainous regions of Georgia, in Russia, for
(38)example have had 5000 people who are 100 years old or more. It has been found that these

of the people (44) tend to be fat and even they drink large quantities of alcohol regularly.

Rice growing farmers are the only ones who truly understand when it is time to gather
young grains to make Cốm. Then young rice grains are harvested, roasted and ground down to
become Cốm. They are put into a large firing pan under small flames and stirred slowly for a
specific period of time. They are then poured into a rice mortar and slightly pounded with a wooden
pestle, rhythmically and at quick intervals until the husk is removed. Following this, the young rice
is removed from the mortar and winnowed before being poured again into the mortar and the
process repeated. This is then repeated exactly seven times so that all the husk is removed from
the young sticky grains. If the pounding is done irregularly and in haste, or it is not repeated for the
prescribed seven times, the green colour of the grains will disappear and be replaced by an
unexpected brown colour. Cốm is regarded as a purely pastoral gift. To enjoy Cốm it is advisable to
chew it slowly so that one can feel the stickiness of the young rice and at the same time enjoy its
sweet, fragrant taste. Visitors to Vong village (about five kms from Hanoi) during the Cốm making
season will have a chance to listen to the special rhythmic pounding of wooden pestles against
mortars filled with young rice and see women shifting and winnowing the pounded young rice.

2. Read the passage and answer the questions below it.

In 1960, an American psychiatrist named William Dement published experiments dealing
with the recording of eye-movements during sleep. He showed that the average individual’s sleep
cycle is punctuated with peculiar bursts of eye-movement, some drifting and slow, others jerky and
rapid. People woken during these periods of eye-movement generally reported that they had been
dreaming. When woken at other times they reported no dreams. If one group of people were
disturbed from their eye-movement sleep for several nights on end, and another group were
disturbed for an equal period of time but when they were not exhibiting eye-movements, the first
group began to show, while the others seemed more or less unaffected. The implications of all this
were that it was not the disturbance of sleep that mattered but the disturbance of dreaming.
16. When did William Dement published his experiments with human sleeping?
In 1960.
17. According to William Dement, what do we do during our eye-movement?
We are dreaming.

Anger, fear, or the shock of sudden sorrow brings physical changes in our bodies. The
digestion is shut down, the blood pressure is raised, the heart speeds up, and the skin becomes cold.
If maintained over a prolonged period, this emergency status makes the body - and the personality -
tight, dry and rigid. In people who are afraid to let themselves pour forth their painful emotions,
doctors find that suppressed tears can trigger such ailments as asthma, migraine headache, and
many others. Weeping, on the other hand, comes as part of the reversal of conditions of alarm,
shock and anger. Tears do not, therefore, mark a breakdown or low point, but a transition to
warmth, hope and health. So there is a genuine wisdom in tears. In permitting ourselves to weep
instead of repressing the impulse, we help ourselves to health.
21. How many physical changes that can be brought by anger, fear, or the shock of sudden
sorrow are mentioned?
Four: The digestion is shut down, the blood pressure is raised, the heart speeds up, and the skin
becomes cold.
22. Does the emergency status affect human personality?
Yes, it does.
23. What are two health problems that can result from suppressed tears?
Asthma and migraine.
24. Can weeping cause a breakdown?
No, it can’t.
25. Regarding health, do people benefit from weeping?
Yes, they do.

Why are there so many grandmothers and so few grandfathers? In other words, why do men
die younger than women? Is this because men are afraid of getting old and helpless and so they
prefer to die before that happens? Perhaps they fear to be left alone by their women and so decide
to do the leaving first. Many explanations are given for the fact that men die earlier than women.

Two main techniques have been used for training elephants, which we may call respectively
the tough and the gentle. The former method simply consists of setting an elephant to work and
beating him until he does what is expected of him. Apart from any moral considerations, this is a
stupid method of training, for it produces a resentful animal who at a later stage may well turn into
a man-killer. The gentle method requires more patience in the early stages, but produces a cheerful,
good-tempered elephant who will give many years of loyal service. The first essential in elephant
training is to assign to the animal a single trainer who will be entirely responsible for the job.
Elephants like to have one master just as dogs do, and are capable of a considerable degree of

personal affection. There are even stories of half-trained elephant calves who have refused to feed
and pined to death when, by some unavoidable circumstance, they have been deprived of their own
trainer. Such extreme cases must probably be taken with a grain of salt, but they do underline the
general principle that the relationship between elephant and trainer is the key to successful training.

In 1850, during the Gold Rush, a twenty-year-old immigrant from Bavaria named Levi
Strauss stepped off the boat in San Francisco. He had with him a special cloth called Serge de
Nimes, which would later be called denim in America. Levi Strauss hoped to sell the denim as
material to make tents and covers for wagons, to the men who were going to the goldfields to look
for gold. “You should have brought pants to sell. In the goldfields we need strong pants that don’t
wear out,” one young miner advised Strauss. So Levi Strauss took some of his denim to the nearest
tailor and had him make the miner a pair of pants. The miner was so pleased with his pants that he
told other miners about the wonderful new Levi’s pants or Levis, and soon Levi Strauss had to open
a shop to manufacture enough trousers for the miners. The miners wanted trousers that were
comfortable to ride in, that were low-cut so they could bend over easily to pick up the gold from
under their feet, and which had big useful pockets. One miner complained that the gold in his
pockets kept tearing them. So Levi put metal corners in the pockets to make them stronger. Very
soon, miners and cowboys from all over came to get fitted up with Levi’s pants. Today, more than a
hundred years later, Levi’s pants walk the world as Levi’s blue jeans.

Theodosius, after they became professional circuses and carnivals. The modern Olympic Games

4. Read the passage and answer the questions below it.
Long ago people did not even think about conservation. There were very few people. They
learned that using wood, ores, and other natural resources could make their life easier. Then people
began to live longer and the number of people living on the earth grew. Today, billions of people
live on earth and use more and more natural resources. People are using up fossil fuels and other
natural resources faster than the planet can replace them. People cut down forests and destroy the
homes of many plants and animals. People need to use renewable resources wisely. It’s important to
plant a tree for every tree cut down. Governments set up national parks where logging, mining,
hunting and other activities that use up natural resources are usually not allowed. Our endless
supply of air and water must be protected. Polluted air can make you sick and you cannot drink
polluted water. Factories, power plants, cars, and trucks give off smoke that pollutes the air. Some
factories dump chemical into lakes and rivers. Some places on earth have plenty of water, but
deserts and other places do not, It is important to conserve water so that everyone has enough to
drink and use for watering crops. Conservationists do a good job by looking for ways to save
natural resources so that people will have enough lumber, fossil fuels, water and food. They also
look for ways to save endangered plants and animals.
26. Why do people have to think about conservation?
People are using up fossil fuels and other natural resources faster than the planet can replace them.
27. When did the population of the world increase?
When people began to live longer.
28. What should people do to use renewable resources wisely?
They should plant trees, set up national parks, protect andless supply of air and water.
29. What is the source that makes the air polluted?
Factories, power plants, cars, and trucks give off smoke that pollutes the air. (Some factories dump
chemical into lakes and rivers.)
30. What are conservationists trying to do?
They are looking for ways to save natural resources so that people will have enough lumber, fossil
fuels, water and food. They also look for ways to save endangered plants and animals.

Almost all the energy on Earth comes from the Sun. Heat from the Sun makes Earth warm
enough for life. Plants use the Sun’s energy to live and grow. Plants give off a gas called oxygen.
Animals eat the plants and breathe the oxygen. Animals need plants in order to live, and plants need
the Sun.
You use plants to make heat and energy. You can burn wood from trees. You can burn fossil
fuels called coal, gas, and oil. Fossil fuels formed deep underground from plants and animals that
died millions of years ago.
The Sun’s energy can also do harm. Too much sunlight can burn your skin, causing sunburn.
Harmful rays from the Sun can also cause a disease called skin cancer. Looking right at the Sun can
harm your eyes. You need to be careful of the Sun. The center of the Sun is called the core, which is
extremely hot. It takes a long time for the energy from the core to reach the surface of the sun - about
170,000 years.
31. Why is the sun vital?
Because almost all the energy on Earth comes from the Sun.
32. Where do fossil fuels come from?
Fossil fuels formed deep underground from plants and animals that died millions of years ago.
33. How many physical disadvantages does the sun bring on people?
Three: sunburn, skin cancer, harm the eyes.
34. Why aren’t people burned with the heart from the sun’s core?
Because It takes a long time for the energy from the core to reach the surface of the sun.
35. How long does it take for the energy from the core to reach the surface?
About 170,000 years.

living things from the dangerous rays of the sun. In the mid-1980s, scientists discovered that the
ozone layer above Antarctica was very thin. They call this the ‘ozone hole’. Scientists have also
discovered that since 1970 the temperature of the air and the water in Antarctica has been slowly
rising. Warmer temperatures result in less sea ice during the winter months. Scientists think that

SECTION B: Read the following passages and answer the questions that follow.
Passage 1
During the teenage years, many young people can at times be difficult to talk to. They often seem to
dislike being questioned. They may seem unwilling to talk about their work in school. This is a
normal development at this age, though it can be very hard for parents to understand. It is part of
becoming independent of teenagers trying to be adult while they are still growing up. Young
people are usually more willing to talk if they believe that questions are asked out of real interest
and not because people are trying to check up on them.

Parents should do their best to talk to their sons and daughters about school work and future
plan but should not push them to talk if they don’t want to. Parents should also watch for the danger
signs: some young people trying to be adult may experiment with sex, drugs, alcohol or smoking.
Parents need to watch for any signs of unusual; behaviour which may be connected with these and
get help if necessary.
Questions:

1- Why do adults sometimes find teenagers difficult to talk to?

Because They often seem to dislike being questioned.

2- Why do some teenagers experiment with drinking and smoking?

Because they are trying to be adult.

3- What does the word “behaviour” in the passage mean?

It’s means “manners”.

4- When can we expect young people to be more talkative than usual?

Young people are usually more willing to talk if they believe that questions are asked out of
real interest and not because people are trying to check up on them.

5- How should parents deal with their teenage children?

Passage 2
People have always dreamed of living forever, and although we all know this will not
happen, we still want to live as long as possible. Naturally, there are advantages and disadvantages
to a long life.
In the first place, people who live longer can spend more time with their family and friends.
Secondly, people who have busy working lives look forward to a long; relaxing retirement when
they can do all the things they have never had time for.
On the other hand, there are some serious disadvantages. Firstly, many people become ill
and consequently have to spend time in hospital or become dependent on their children and friends.
Many of them find this dependence annoying or embarrassing. In addition to this, the older people
get, the fewer friends they seem to have because old friends die or become ill and it's often difficult

Passage 4
The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made
enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to
eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet

Passage 5.
Radio waves are a mystery. Though scientists assume that they are a form of electric energy, no
one as yet has been able to prove it. But even though scientists are not quite sure what radio waves
are, they are constantly learning how to make use of them.
One of the first scientists to experiment with their use was an Italian named Macroni. In 1897 he
formed a wireless company to install wireless sets in ships at sea, in light ships, and in lighthouses
along the coast of England. With such equipment, he believed that a ship in danger of sinking could
radio for help. Two years later he was proved right. A light ship, pounded and damaged by heavy
seas, radioed a nearby station and got help in time to prevent loss of life.
Questions
1. What are the scientists learning?
They are learning how to make use of radio waves.
2. What nationality was Macroni ?
He was Italian.
3. What did he install in ships?
wireless sets.
4. Why were radio waves a mystery ?

Passage 6
Among the more than 1.5 million species of living things that have been described and
named, the human species is unique in that its members adapt to the environment primarily by a
complicated form of learned behavior called culture, which is transmitted from generation to
generation by the symbol system of language. For all practical purposes, geographic variation in our
species is now irrelevant because people adapt to the environment primarily by means of behavior,
whose biological basis is in the brain and is not reflected in superficial differences in body surfaces.
When they first evolved, people who had dark-colored skin were better adapted to climatic
conditions near the equator than those who had light-colored skins, but few human beings now live
under natural conditions. Also, technological advances have assured that at the present time, human
beings of various races are as likely to reproduce in one environment as in another. The superficial
differences between existing human races are thus largely relics of the past and are not of much
functional significance today.

Passage7
Traditionally, mental tests have been divided into two types. Achievement tests are designed to
measure acquired skills and knowledge, particularly those that have been explicitly taught. The
proficiency exams required by some states for high school graduation are achievement tests.
Aptitude tests are designed to measure a person’s ability to acquire new skills or knowledge. For
example, vocational aptitude tests can help you decide whether you would do better as a mechanic
or musician However, All mental tests are in some sense achievement tests because they assume
some sort of past learning or experience with certain objects, words or situations . The difference
between achievement and aptitude tests is one of degree and intended use.
Questions
1.What is the author’s main purpose in this passage?
To distinguish between achievement and aptitude tests.
2.How many types of the mental tests are there and what are they?
Two types: achievement and aptitude tests.

During the teenage years, many young people can at times be difficult to talk to. They often
seem to dislike being questioned. They may seem unwilling to talk about their work in school. This
is a normal development at this age, though it can be very hard for parents to understand. It is part
of becoming independent of teenagers trying to be adult while they are still growing up. Young
people are usually more willing to talk if they believe that questions are asked out of real interest
and not because people are trying to check up on them.

Parents should do their best to talk to their sons and daughters about school work and future
plan but should not push them to talk if they don’t want to. Parents should also watch for the danger
signs : some young people trying to be adult may experiment with sex, drugs, alcohol or smoking.
Parents need to watch for any sighs of unusual, behaviour which may be connected with these and
get help if necessary.
Questions : (as: Passage1)

1.Why do adults sometimes find teenagers difficult to talk to?

2.Why do some teenagers experiment with drinking and smoking?

3.What does the word “behaviour” in the passage mean?

4.When can we expect young people to be more talkative than usual?

5.How should parents deal with their teenage children?

To be successful, a business traveler must be able to maintain contact with the office, no matter
what the time or place. Negotiations often involve decisions based on the latest figures. New
telecommunications products and services now on the market make staying in touch easier than
ever before.
The most widespread device is the cellular telephone, the price of which has dropped from several
thousand dollars to a few hundred, including installation. There are over two million mobile cellular
phones in use today, including both car phones and cordless transportable units. Car phones have
proven indispensable for road emergencies as well as routine business transactions. Phone service
is also available on airplanes and on the rails.
Recently introduced pocket- side organizers help business travelers with heavy schedules keep track
of clients. These are tiny computers that can store all kinds of information. They can serve as phone
and address directories, calendars, electronic memo pads, and calculators, among other uses.
Another invaluable telecommunications tool is smaller, lighter fax machines that plug into any
standard electrical outlet and phone line. The devices allow instantaneous transmission of hard copy

Health Effects Of Tea
A recent international meeting held in Washington explored the health effects of drinking
tea . Researchers from the United States, Japan, China, Britain and the Netherlands presented the
latest studies about the effects of tea on health. Scientists say tea contains natural chemicals. These
chemicals block the action of some substances produced in the body that cause cancer. They say tea
contains the same substances in fruits and vegetables which are now being studied for possible use
in fighting cancer . This means that drinking tea could protect people’s health .
Our scientists at the meeting presented a study that was done in Beijing, China. A professor
at the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine studied 59 people with growths in their mouth
which were expected to become cancers. About 30 received 6 months of treatment with a mix of
green tea and black tea . The others received a neutral substance. The area of cell growth was
reduced 38% in the treated patients. The area of cell growth was reduced 10% in the patients who
were not treated with tea .
