  World Englishes for Intercultural Competence

Intercultural competence is the ability to develop targeted knowledge, skills and attitudes that lead to visible
behaviour and communication that are both effective and appropriate in intercultural interactions

Constituent elements of intercultural competence:

 Knowledge
 Skills
 Attitudes

These are the elements that we need to achieve, for us to be able to think and act appropriately, and to
communicate and work with people from different cultural background.

Knowledge:
 Cultural self-awareness
 Culture specific knowledge
 Sociolinguistic awareness
 Grasp of global issues and trends
Skills:
 Listening, observing, evaluating
 Analysing, interpreting, and relating
 Critical thinking
Attitudes:
 Respect
 Openness
 Curiosity
 Discovery

Knowledge:
Cultural self awareness refers to the awareness of how culture has influenced the self. Cultural self-
awareness includes recognition of one's own cultural influences upon values, beliefs, and judgments. In
knowledge, we have to understand that every culture differs from one another and that each has its own
fundamental knowledge. There are various languages and modes of communication within cultures. When it
comes to talking with people from different cultures, there are many adjustments that must be created, so it is
crucial for us to develop an awareness of sociolinguistics. In order to be culturally aware, we must be aware of
global concerns and trends that explain the purpose and implications of globalization and relate local issues to
global causes.

Skills:
In order to communicate with people from different cultures, we need to be able to listen, observe, evaluate,
analyze, interpret, relate, and use critical thinking. We must comprehend one another through the abilities we
possess, as we are all aware, different cultures are distinct from one another. We are able to identify
ethnocentrism and reduce it by listening, observing, and judging.
These abilities will help us understand and interpret the world from the perspectives of many civilizations
while also understanding our own. If we possess these abilities, it will promote the acceptance of variations in
appearance, behaviors, and culture.
Attitudes:
To appreciate the differences between cultures, we need to adopt the attitudes of respect, openness, curiosity,
and discovery. We may be aware of the variations in cultural beliefs and values, but not everyone will
recognize and embrace them. We ought to acknowledge the differences between your culture and my culture.
Understanding one's culture can be accomplished through becoming aware of and seeking out interactions
between cultures and differences. Learning about different cultures will provide us with the knowledge we
need to determine whether our actions are appropriate while engaging with people from those cultures.
