( Please note girls, the below experiments are taken from last year record book and
the page numbers and figures mentioned will not be the same. So will give exact
page numbers of new text book later in whatsapp group )

( There is no brain experiment. Do not draw it )

* Draw the diagrams in pencil neatly on the plain sheet beside each experiment.
Tomorrow a sample old record will be kept in your class room and you come for PTM you can might as well
check for any doubts or meet me to clear the doubts.

Osmosis - Potato Osmoscope

Aim: To study osmosis with the help of a potato osmoscope.

Requirements: A large potato, pins, petri dish, sugar solution, water, a knife.

Procedure: Take a large size potato. Cut its one side so as to make it flat. Bore a cavity from the
other side in such a way that a very thin base is left intact on the flat side. Remove the skin near the
edge of the flat end because the skin of the potato is impermeable to water.

Pour sugar solution in the cavity of the potato up to one –half. Mark the level of sugar solution in
the cavity with the help of a pin. Place the potato on its flat cut end in a petri dish half full of water.
Note that after sometime the level of sugar solution has risen in the cavity. Mark this reading along
with another pin.

Observation: The level of the sugar solution in the cavity of the potato rises indicating that the
solution has absorbed water from the petri dish. Water enters the sugar solution when it is separated
from it by a semi-permeable membrane by osmosis.
