MAN 18.240
Layout
The structure is based on the chassis of the MAN 18.240 4X4 truck. Its core is a
rectangular frame that bolts onto the truck chassis. Onto it, a 7 piece telescopic mast is pinned so
that it can scope up. The movement is controlled with an electrical 12V winch and wire ropes.
The tower is supported with 2 side hollow sections that act as struts. Mechanical jacks at the
front, sides and back of the truck lift it prior to erection, in order to level it and provide a stable
foundation for the tower.
.
Structural model
To analyse this structure, a SAP2000 computer model is created to check all structural
elements. The analysis performed is non-linear, i.e. allows for non-linearity in the behavior of the
structural components (Members can have tension limits or compression limits). Forces arising
from the wind acting on antennas are included and applied on their supporting members.
Axial forces arising from wind blowing in the Y direction. Yellow denotes tension, red
denotes compression
Overturning calculations
Since overturning of the structure is crucial under wind forces, the model is fully capable
of overturning, to ensure that its self weight or counterweights are adequate.
Project Standards
The structure is analysed assuming non-linear attributes to certain structural members. This is due to the fact that it is
not fixed to the ground. For this reason the model allows for full overturning of the whole structure under wind or any
nd
other forces A P-delta analysis for 2 order phenomena is included in every examined analysis case. (ie when the
mast starts inclining under acting forces, the displacement of the center of gravity is accounted for and contributes
towards overturning of the structure)
Wind loads
Survival reference wind speed was taken to be equal to 110Km/h (30m/sec)
Operational reference wind speed was taken to be equal to 90Km/h (25m/sec)
Structure Class II – Exposure category B – Topographic category I
When calculating wind forces, 4 separate cases are examined: Wind blowing in the X, Y, -Y and 60 degrees.
Dead loads
Each 60cm MW Antenna is considered to weight 0.30KN
Each 1.40m cell is considered to weight 0.30KN
Each 2.70m cell is considered to weight 0.60KN
Loading Scenario 1
3 x 1.40 x 0.28m Cellular antennas at top
3 x 1.40 x 0.28m Cellular antennas at 13.00m AGL
1 x 60cm MW antennas at 13.50m AGL
10 x 1/2’ feeders placed in 2 rows back to back
Loading Scenario 2
3 x 2.60 x 0.27m Cellular antennas at top
1 x 60cm MW antennas at 13.50m AGL
10 x 1/2’ feeders placed in 2 rows back to back
ANALYSIS RESULTS
Overturning Check

Sliding check
Summing all reactions of the structure for the worst case (CW-45) we get:
Max horizontal force = 4.62KN
83.22KN in the vertical Z direction
