 Love Makes the World Go Round

Compere 1: Dear ladies and gentleman. I’m very glad that you have come to
the party, dedicated to the most wonderful holiday of the year – St.
Valentine’s Day. In all English speaking countries February 14 is a special
day for people in love. It’s not a holiday, but it is a very good day for flower
shops, chocolate shops and card shops. Boys send cards to their girlfriends,
and girls send cards to their boyfriends. But often they don’t write their
names in the cards. The name of the person sending the card is a secret, -
that’s the tradition.

Compere 2: But where does the holiday come from? Rome… 5 century AD.
The emperor Julius Caesar wants to form the strongest army in the world.
“The real man must be the real soldier, he mustn’t be at the woman’s skirt,”
says Caesar. “He must go to the wars and nothing must connect him with his
home. I forbid my warriors to marry.” The order was sent everywhere in the
country.

Compere 1: But can you forbid the sun to shine and the rain to water the
earth, can you order the birds not to sing the songs, and a young heart not to
love? And the order is disobeyed when the young and handsome soldiers of
the Roman army meet beautiful girls.

Compere2: And if they cannot marry in the legal way they have the
opportunity to marry secretly, because there is the priest Valentine in the
army who marries the couples in spite of Caesar’s order. Many families were
formed due to the priest. But one day he was betrayed and executed on
February 14.

Compere1: The couples who found happiness thanks to this priest began to
call him St. Valentine and celebrate February 14 as the day of all
sweethearts. Not long ago we began to celebrate this holiday in Ukraine.

Compere 2: So, today is February 14 and we celebrate this holiday of

sweethearts – St. Valentine’s Day. Our pupils prepared a poetic declaration
of love.

Love… It’s a very complicated feeling. Sometimes it needs sacrifice and it’s
incompatible with hypocrisy, lie and insincerity. Love… It’s the most
beautiful feeling mankind has ever known. It fills our hearts, and thoughts,
and deeds. It’s a strong feeling but it’s very fragile and sometimes it needs
protection. And if it doesn’t have any, it may become a sad story.

No doubt, there is hardly a person who has not love or has not been loved at
least once a lifetime. But it’s very hard to express your feelings in words.
Some people can show their feelings in dance.

Stores advertise heavily for this holiday since it is traditional for sweethearts,
spouses and members of the family to exchange gifts on Valentine’s Day.
All the decorations are bright red and the most popular ones are heart shaped.

Valentine often shows a cupid with an arrow. Cupid also called Eros, was the
ancient Roman god of love.

Many newspapers carry advertisements or messages placed by people in

love. Both men and women want to let their sweethearts know how much
they love them. On Valentine’s Day many radio stations play romantic music
all day long. And we want you to listen to the song of The Beatles
“Yesterday”.
Valentine’s Day is a day to share loving feelings with friends and family.
Famous couples are remembered. Some of them are Romeo and Juliet,
Caesar and Cleopatra and others. I want you to match the famous couples.

Our party is over. But remember: Love is one of the best feelings. It is
unique and eternal as our life. It rules the world, it makes the world go round.
It’s beyond the age and time. So, let’s love and be loved by others. And our
earth will become more beautiful and kinder.
