SCHOOLS DIVISION OF CITY OF BALANGA
BALANGA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
BRGY. TALISAY, CITY OF BALANGA, BATAAN
According to John W. Rogers Jr., “Financial Literacy is just as important in life as the other
basics”. Balanga Elementary School sees the importance of educating their teachers not only about
the pedagogy and improving their professional development but also they acknowledged the
importance of educating the teachers in managing their financial matters as it is one of the life skills
needed in the 21st century. The school therefore conducted an Online Learning Action Cell about
Financial Literacy for teachers which was conducted last June 16, 2022, 3:00 pm via Google Meet.
Mrs. Analyn Venegas, Floating teacher served as the moderator for the OLAC. Prayer was
led by Mr. Florencio Mina Jr., Floating teacher followed by checking of the attendance by Ms. Ara
Rae A. Reyes, Kindergarten Teacher. Dr. Rufina E. Ramos, School Principal, gave the opening
remarks. In her message, she emphasized how this is a very important topic and hoping that whatever
they learned must always put into action and be implemented after learning it. She hoped that
everyone will feel enriched on what they’re going to learn especially on how the teachers will
manage their finances. Money can be a good or evil thing so handling finances well especially for
teachers can make money their servant and not their master. After the impactful message from the
school principal, the OLAC Proper started with Mrs. Grace Almario, a Grade 4 Teacher as the
speaker.
She started by lightening up the mood of everyone with a fun icebreaker. She asked the
teachers to think of a song that describes their finances. Teachers gave some witty answers for that
question. Then followed by giving a reality check to the teachers that some people really live as a one
day millionaire and the culprit for having bad finances is the instant gratification of people where
they purchased all their wants. She then explained what financial literacy is which is the ability to
understand and use various financial skills. She explained the importance of knowledge in financial
literacy which includes: earning money is not enough to guarantee a secured financial future and that
it helps in effective money management, making financial decisions and achieving financial stability.
The 4 components of Financial Literacy was taught. These are: Investing, instead of saving
money in bank, investing it in stocks or cryptocurrency and etc. Saving, which ensures financial
wellness. Debt which is one’s borrowing. She explained that therea re Bad Debt and Good Debt. Bad
Debt includes lavishing and spending money in your wants while Good debts are making use of
money in things that are necessary in making a living. Lasly, Budgeting which is an essential life
skill in acquiring financial knowledge for planning and managing money. All these four components
were explained by her thoroughly and relating it to personal situations and experiences. She ended
with the message that “Saving is not Difficult when it is done systematically” and “it is important not
only to earn money but know your money”.
After the OLAC Proper/ Discussion, sharing of experiences and thoughts followed. The first
to share some tips or wisdom about financial literacy is Mrs. Melanie Pincil, she emphasized how
important it is to learn how to spend not above your means. She said that, “Hangga’t maiksi ang
kumot matutong bumaluktot”. And that investing money is helpful. Next to share is Assistant
Principal, Mr. Randy Tallorin, being an entrepreneur/ someone who owns a business, he shared some
tips based on his personal experience. He said that if their thinking of making a business, it is
important to know the place and check the feasibility of the product in that place. The target
consumers is also important to know the price point. And of course learn how to be thrifty. Dr.
Rufina Ramos also added that if they can’t really be wealthy when it comes to money, what’s
important is that they have enough resources to spend for their family and have enough money to
help other people or to share their blessing to others.
To end the OLAC Session, Mr. Randy Tallorin gave the closing remarks and end with the
message that there is no perfect recipe on how to be rich or wealthy but what is important is to know
how to manage funds well and learn to sacrifice a little bit of joy or sacrifice the instant gratification
in order to save for a secured future.
