ELITE COACHES’ MASTERMIND

6 STEPS TO TAKE MASSIVE ACTION

V. LEAVE YOUR PHONE IN THE GARAGE WHEN

YOU GET HOME EACH EVENING
We all have regret.

I have several regrets for sure, but my biggest regret is that I was not present as a
husband or father nearly enough.

There were (and still are) so many nights I was gone coaching a football game or
being the 'admin on duty' for a basketball, soccer, baseball game, etc.). You are a
coach, so you understand. I was gone a lot doing my job.
The issue was when I was home; I was not present like I should have been. I came
home every night, and we ate together as a family but afterward, I retreated to the
living room to 'veg out' w/ my laptop and TV remote.

DON'T DO THIS.

Have a trigger to remind yourself to be locked in for your family when they get to
spend rare time with you. When you press the garage door opener, tell yourself
you will serve them for the next ninety minutes. Leave your cell phone on a table
in the garage where it cannot be a distraction.
"What if my players need me during this time?" I was asked this question by a
young coach recently. My response was, "Tell them what your system is. Tell
them your wife needs your total attention for a time when you get home. You are
teaching them what an elite husband looks like."

In September 2018, my wife of twenty-two years asked me not to come home that
night. Three days later, she filed for divorce. She was tired of being a non-present
coach's wife. She was tired of feeling like she was not as important as my job.
Make sure your spouse never feels this way. It is not impossible to be an elite
coach and elite at home, but it will not happen by accident.
Make the commitment.

“Sometimes you never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.”

“Nothing ever happened in the past; it will happen in the NOW. Nothing will happen in the future; it will
happen in the NOW.”
