I. Background Information for Learners

Impressionism is an art movement that originated with a group of Paris-based artists whose

independent exhibitions brought them to prominence during the 1870s and 1880s. This movement uses
expressive brushstrokes, emphasis on movement rather than on clarity of form and optical effects of
color and artists usually paint outdoors (en plein air). The name Impressionism was coined from the title
of a work by French painter Claude Monet, Impression, soleil levant (Impression, Sunrise)

Abstract Expressionism is one of the 20th Century Art Movement. Abstractionism grew up in New
York in the 1940s and 1950s. It was somehow meant to encompass not only the work of painters who
filled their canvases with fields of color and abstract forms, but also those who attacked their canvases
with a vigorous gestural expressionism. Expressionism arose in the early 1900s were created works are
more emotional force rather than realistic or natural images. To achieve this, they distorted outlines,
applied strong colors and exaggerated forms. They worked more with their imagination and feelings,
rather than with what their eyes saw in the physical world. Among the various styles that arose within
the expressionist art movements were: neo-primitivism, fauvism, dadaism, surrealism and social
realism. Neo-primitivism: An art style that incorporated elements from the native arts of the South Sea
Islanders and the wood carvings of African tribes. It uses oval faces and elongated shapes of African art
in both his sculptures and paintings. Fauvism: It was derived from les fauves (“wild beasts”), referring
to the group of French expressionist painters who painted in this style. Style that used bold, vibrant
colors and visual distortions. Dadaism: A style characterized by dream fantasies, memory images, and
visual tricks and surprises. They chose the child’s term for hobbyhorse, dada, to refer to their new “non-
style.” Surrealism: This style depicted an illogical, subconscious dream world beyond the logical,
conscious, physical one. It came from the term “super realism,” with its artworks clearly expressing a
departure from reality.
