ISOTHERMAL PROCESS (T=K)

 It is a process in which the temperature remains constant but the pressure and volume of a
thermodynamic system will change.
 Also known as Constant Temperature Process
 The curve for an isothermal process is called isotherm.

BOYLE’S LAW
ENTHALPY ( Δ H )

INTERNAL ENERGY ( Δ U)

WORK (W)

HEAT (Q)

EXAMPLE PROBLEM

1. Three moles of an ideal gas (Cp= ) is allowed to expand isothermally at 25℃ from 15L
to 30L. Calculate Q, W, ΔU, & ΔH.

Given:
n = 3 moles

Cp =
T = 25℃ + 273.15 = 298.15K
V1 = 15L
V2 = 30L

Solution:
ΔU = 0 ΔH = 0

2.
a) Find the work done by 1kg of Hydrogen on a piston when the hydrogen expands
isothermally at 600K from 98.1 N/cm2 to 981 N/cm2.
b) Find the work done by a volume of Hydrogen which is initially the same as in (a), when
it expands isothermally at 330K through the same pressure range.

Solution:

(a) M = 1kg
T = 600K
P1 = 98.1 N/cm2
P2 = 981 N/cm2

(b) T = 330K
