SUBJECT: Trip report: “¿Qué me hace competitivo para medicina?”

MEETING PURPOSE
On Wednesday, March 8th, 2023, the former MD student, and founder of “Puertorromed”, Ónix
Santiago Heredia, offered a conference called; “¿Qué me hace competitivo para medicina?”. The
meeting was held at 7:00 pm via Zoom meeting. The main purpose of this conference was to
inform about some aspects to make an undergraduate student a candidate for medical school
competitively including:
• Grade Point Average (GPA)
• Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
• Clinical experience
• Volunteer service

HOW TO BE MORE COMPETITIVE IN MED SCHOOL

In this conference, Ónix starts explaining his timeline, and how he became a med student. Then he
shows all the student associations he had been in at the University of Puerto Rico at Ponce. After
that, he presented a table of “Mean importance ratings of academic, experiential, demographic,
and interview data used by admissions committees for making decisions about which applicants
receive interview invitations and accept offers”. Furthermore, he presented a lot of factors of high
importance about the GPA. Finally, he discussed the benefits of his program, and the good that it
can bring us during our bachelor’s in science, and then when it comes time to take the MCAT and,
apply to medical school.

CONCLUSION
After attendance at this conference, all the information that Ónix Santiago Heredia bring was very
valuable and it will go to help all the students to be more competitive and, get more motivated to
do all extracurricular activities before applying to medical school. Also, thanks to him, the students
can be more prepared to get exams like the MCAT and have a better experience during the
Bachelor of Science. Thanks to this conference I have the knowledge that I needed to know all the
things that a student needs to be more competitive before applying to medical school.
