CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The Tiktok app was the most popular on social media. This app was the world’s

prominent destination for creating short mobile videos in Asia, the United States, and the

other parts of the world. It emerged from the founders of the app called Musical.ly and

Tiktok, also known as Douyin in China.

A small but growing share of U.S. adults say they regularly get news on TikTok.

This is in contrast with many other social media sites, where news consumption has

either declined or stayed about the same in recent years. In just two years, the share of

U.S. adults who say they regularly get news from TikTok has roughly tripled, from 3% in

2020 to 10% in 2022.The video-sharing platform has reported high earnings the past year

and has become especially popular among teens – two-thirds of whom report using it in

some way– as well as young adults.Adults under 30 are the most likely group to say they

regularly get news on TikTok. About a quarter of Americans in this age group (26%) say

they regularly get news there, higher than in 2021 and 2020. This compares with 10% of

those ages 30 to 49, 4% of those 50 to 64 and just 1% of those 65 and older.More of

TikTok’s U.S. adult users are getting news there as well. Currently, a third of TikTok

users say they regularly get news on the site, up from 22% who said the same in 2020.

Still, TikTok users remain far less likely than users of Twitter or Facebook to get news on

the site (katerina,2022).

3

Tiktok is a wide-ranging app that people can use in their daily lives. There are

several contents that they can encounter; it could be appropriate or not but it has different

contents that wouldn’t be fitted to other ages; it contained pornographica and violent

images, language, and videos; including violence towards people and animals (ISPCC,

2019). Being exposed to this kind of contents could lead to serious circumstances that

could affect the way people think and especially their morality. The mindset of a person

was an important thing to protect because all the wrongdoings came from immorality.

The Tiktok app was one of the great platforms that encouraged to improve their

self-esteem by practicing their pronunciation and speaking skills in front of the camera.

This can be useful, especially during school, college, and work presentations. In the

Philippines, Tiktok was patrionized especially of many teenagers. The article published

in Byte Dance’s advertising resources indicates that Tiktok had 35.96 million users aged

18 and above in the Philippines in early 2022 (Data portal, 2022). Moreover, TikTok

influenced everyone from the oldest to youngest who could generate the app. Researchers

can’t deny that there is something in Tiktok that makes fellow Filipinos devoted to the

app, it gives them comfort and help them to accompanied their emotions.

Byte Dance is the owner of the app, which was created in China. The

sophisticated software, now known as TikTok, was once known as Musically. It boasts

500 million monthly active users and is available in 34 languages. The fourth most

downloaded social media app is TikTok, which is followed by YouTube, Snapchat, and

Instagram. Previous research has demonstrated the connection between these image-

focused apps and a number of mental health problems, including body dissatisfaction,

eating disorders, and narcissistic personalities. Parental disengagement, child

4

pornography, and cyberbullying have all been brought on by the use of this application.

The research employs a pragmatic method to investigate in-depth causes behind TikTok’s

unexpectedly huge success among teenagers, as well as its benefits and drawbacks.

Young people used the app to express themselves through singing, dancing,

comedy, and lip syncing, and it allowed them to make videos and share them with others.

They grew their following by utilizing photographs and writing to tell stories about their

personal lives and lifestyle, interacting with their audiences both online and offline, and

monetizing them by embedding native advertising into blog posts or social media posts.

Senior High School students in emerging adulthood could say that they are more

likely to lose track of time on TikTok the more they use the app throughout the day. This

could then negatively impact how these senior high school students are able to pay

attention in class and complete their schoolwork. The more time that a senior high school

students spends on Tiktok, the more they will lose track of time, which then impacts their

ability to complete their classes. This could in turn cause them to get worse grades than if

they did not go on Tiktok as often or at all because they would not have the distraction

from the app.

The purpose of the study is to identify the effect of Tiktok on every Grade 12 GAS

student in Masbate National Comprehensive High School.

The Researchers identified the possible influences of Tiktok and spread awareness

to Senior High School students and presented the ways it affects their academic

performance.
5

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the thorough and in-

depth search done by the Researchers. It is also a review of the existing literature relevant

to the topic of Influence of TikTok application to academic performance of grade 12 gas

students.

Related Literature

The study’s goal is to look at how TikTok is used to help children learn more

vocabulary. The descriptive qualitative analysis approach was employed as the research

methodology in this study. Beginning on Sunday, April 10–13, 2022, this observation

was conducted for three days. Eight students, who were chosen to represent the EFL

students at UMN AL Washliyah Medan, were divided into two groups for this study:

those who use TikTok and those who do not. In order to determine the level of

vocabulary mastery achieved by students, data from all research subjects revealed that 2

of the 8 research subjects were actively viewing review-based content during a vulnerable

period, which was when the research was conducted (Mauriza & Siregar, 2022).

Global culture now includes a significant amount of social media. Social media,

including Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest, is interwoven in our daily lives. More and

more, it is clear that individuals live with their phones in hand and have instant access to

the entire world. But when Bytedance Ltd. Purchased the social media network formerly

known as Musical.ly in August 2018, the face of social media was forever altered. This

study aims to highlight how, if at all, these social media changes have an impact on adult
9

users in light of this evolution. The main goal is to determine whether and how the

TikTok experience affects adults through the use of primary and secondary materials

(Bizel et al., 2022).

Users of TikTok can document their lives by capturing special moments and

producing little movies. It provides individuals with a lot of fun, but it is also evolving

into a new kind of social media addiction. The phrase “social media addiction” describes

recurrent signs of addiction or a lack of self-control when using social media. In

comparison to other mature social media sites like Facebook and Instagram, TikTok’s

penetration and associated maladaptive behavior have received little attention in the

literature on social media addiction (Smith and Short, 2022).

Social media is used by people for both personal and professional reasons. It is a

tool used in management and marketing to direct organizations and advertise goods and

services, particularly to affect the intention and satisfaction of customers. In order to

determine the characteristics that affect continuous desire to use TikTok in Jordan and the

degree to which satisfaction with TikTok influences continuous intention to use TikTok,

the research will define these factors. An analytical cross-sectional quantitative method is

used in the current study. Online questionnaires were used to gather data, which was then

disseminated on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp among other social media

platforms. For further investigation, a total of 402 replies. (Sharabati et al., 2022).

In the past ten years, social media has had a booming impact on education, and it

now offers a viable route for increasing students’ practical abilities. The study’s

objectives were to determine whether TikTok was effective in helping grade 7 pupils
10

learn Thai traditional dancing art and whether they were happy with the learning activity.

35 children in grade 7 from a public school in Thailand participated in the study

(Niyomsuk 2022)

Based on the findings of the study, the conclusions are offered: TikTok had highly

effect on students learning behavior on moral entertainment, publicity, learning new

things, and providing new things. In addition, the effects of TikTok on learning behavior

were not influenced by the student’s strand and time spent using the application

(Gonzaga et al.,2022)

TikTok become a forum for bullying and shaming in front of others, So

endangering the mental health of users and viewers Additionally, because there are no

restrictions on who can use the app, it poses a serious safety risk to children. Being

exposed to hazardous conditions (Simrin, 2020)

Previous studies have also shown the possible application and implementation of

TikTok as an educational tool which may lead to academic success of students Sajonia

2022.However, there are only few previously conducted studies which focuses on the

relationship of TikTok – its positive and negative effect – to one of the determinants of

academic success which is the engagement of students, most especially in a local setting,

meaning further investigation should be performed. In this, this current study aims to

determine TikTok application’s effect to the class engagement of students (Sajonia, 023).

Tiktok is now the favored platform for Generation Z’s desire and interest, that is,

content creation This gives young people  the venue for creating video content showing

their talents, skills, dreams, desires, ambitions, hopes, problems, issues, etc. As a primary
11

tool of self-expression,TikTok has become “the ideal channel for escapism to theapp to

alleviate their boredom or because it’s a quick and easy way to get famous, but it’s

equally possible to frameTikTok’s predictable, lighthearted nature as an anestheticmass

anxiety” (Escober, 2020). TikTok is interactive, with creative challenges and dances

people make for others to recreate and have fun with; therefore, TikTok has a highly

positive effect on students’ learning behavior through moral entertainment, publicity,

learning new things, and providing new things. It provides users with an outlet for

information, relaxation, and a way to connect with friends. This enables you to expand

your mind (Escobar, 2020)

Due to TikTok’s promotion of child pornography, some nations, like India, have

outlawed it. Political leaders have begun to worry about the app years due to the potential

hazards to the government that they pose. Transferring TikTok data from the United

States to China poses a risk, which is another concern. If they upload a video somewhere

and their account happens to be public, their face will be visible to everyone, giving the

government visual proof of who they are (Cabe, 2020)

In an online survey with 85 questions about emerging adulthood and related themes

including anxiety, social media, relationships, stress, and more, 111 college students

between the ages of 18 and 28 from institutions like Bridgewater State University and

UMass Amherst took part. The findings indicated that as individuals spent more time on

TikTok each day, they grew increasingly distracted from their academic work and

attempts to pay attention in class. Similar findings were seen when students tried to focus

in class and finish their homework while both losing track of time and being sidetracked

on TikTok. (Mekler, 2020).

12

Related Studies

According to C. Dilon, The use of application TikTok has had a very little negative

impact on teenagers and young adult students. In his study titled, TikTok Influence on

Teenagers and Young Adult Students: The Common Usages of the Application TikTok,

C. Dilon has also been able to map out the spread of TikTok over the past 3 years and

how it has become a significant participant in the role of influencers, creating an

entrepreneurial possibility with its growth. (Dilon C, 2020).Therefore, the influence of

tiktok on teenagers today, especially those in academic fields, is that it creates a big

impact for them emotionally and spiritually. Using too much social media may result in

some mental disorders, such as depression, trauma, and anxiety.

TikTok is a dynamic audiovisual format, which allows users to post only short

videos; these can be edited with tools provided on the platform (Haenlein et al., 2020).

These short videos provide great interaction, can easily be skipped and are interspersed

with similar content posted by friends (Belanche et al., 2019), thus users find the platform

engaging (Forbes, 2022). TikTok is a more natural and spontaneous platform than

YouTube, with its longer videos, and Instagram, that features more static formats with a

carefully constructed aesthetic (e.g., high-quality, filtered photographs of restaurants).

TikTokers generally appear performing daily activities, or parodies of them, in normal

contexts (e.g., in videos in their own homes), which encourages closer and more informal

connections with followers (Barta et al., 2022)

Khlaif and Salha (2021) claim that the well-known social media app TikTok has the

potential to be a helpful educational tool since it enables the delivery of discrete learning
13

units in a condensed amount of time (less than 60 seconds). Because to TikTok’s

videography features, some inventive teachers have produced TikTok-based projects that

are shared within exclusive school groups. TikTok can assist pedagogical approaches

based on nano-learning principles, making it simpler to create high-quality e-learning

content. TikTok allows for the creation and delivery of creative learning content (Khlaif

& Salha, 2021).

According to the recent sources China has 150 million daily active users of this

social media app. In 2019 TikTok is the most frequent download app from play store

and apple store in the global world. This trend shows that with the passage of time

people are addicted to this social media app day by day. TikTok is a social media

platform for short videos and focuses on vertical reading. The main reason being,

children who are followers of the famous app are vulnerable to pornography. That is not

all. In the recent past, there have been many cases where people have hurt themselves

very seriously while making videos for TikTok. Some of these serious injuries even

resulted in deaths ( Irfan et al., 2020).

14

Conceptual framework

This paper examines the influence on browsing Tiktok at the Masbate National

Comprehensive High school. It’s explained the cause of using Tiktok on the students and

how it affects to their academic performance.

Grade 12 GAS students.

15

Gaps Bridged by the Study

Studies focus on the influence of the Tiktok application on the educational

performance of Grade 12 students in senior high school. The researchers conducted all of

these tests to obtain a sense of how the TikTok app affected pupils based on related

literature study. No general studies on the effects of the Tiktok app on students have been

done, but numerous studies have been done in relation to how the app affects students’

academic performance and helps them avoid addiction. The goal of this study was to

determine how the TikTok app affected students.

CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY

Research methodology refers to the specific "how" in practice of any given piece of

study. More specifically, the topic is how a researcher methodically designs a study to

guarantee results that are accurate and reliable that satisfy the goals and objectives of the

research. A topic's information is found, chosen, processed, and analyzed using a certain

set of steps or techniques known as research methodology. In a research article, the

methodology section enables the reader to assess the general reliability and validity of a

study.

Research Design

In this study, researchers chose a descriptive research design because the research

study required conducting a personal interview. The descriptive research design is

appropriate for this study since the researchers looked for attributes and recognized the

considerable influence of the Tiktok app on the academic performance of the students.

Data Procedure

In collecting data about the influence of the Tiktok application on the academic

performance of Grade 12 GAS Students at Masbate National Comprehensive High

School, researchers prefered to use printed paper forms in creating the questionnaire to

accommodate the chosen respondents in order to gather a reliable information.

19

Sampling Method/Respondents

The chosen probability sampling method was stratified sampling, in which the

researchers select randomly from different sections of respondents to be included in the

study. The respondents for this study would be 296 or (27.3%) of the total of 1,083 grade

12 GAS students who would be randomly selected. The researchers used Slovin’s

formula to identify the sample size of respondents. Thus, this study will help to assess the

influence of the TikTok app on the academic performance of GAS 12 students.

Research Instrumentation

In this study, the researcher will used questionnaire. The questionnaire is a set of

orderly arranged questions carefully prepared to be answered by a group of people and

designed to collect facts and information. The questionnaire consist of three parts: Part I

would gather information pertaining to age, year label, sex and strand. Part II Is the list of

questions to be answered by the respondents, pertaining to their level of awareness

regarding the impact of using Tiktok app. Part III can determine the usage pattern of

using this Tiktok app. After the respondent’s response to the questionnaire, the

researchers are now ready to evaluate and determine the results of their research.

Statistical Treatment of Data

As soon as the researchers gathered data, they were sorted, organized, and

evaluated. Raw data collection is only one aspect of any experiment. The researchers use
20

statistical tools which are the frequency distribution, percentage, and number of

respondents.

1. Frequency distribution (F) is an arrangement of the data which shows

the of different values or groups of variables.

2. Percentage (P) is to be used to determine the proportion of each given

data by using the formula.

where:

P = Percentage

F = Frequency

N = Total or Number of Respondents
