Literature

Nicomedes "Nick" Marquez Joaquin was a Filipino writer

and journalist best known for his short stories and novels

in the English language. He also wrote using the pen

name Quijano de Manila. Joaquin was conferred the

rank and title of National Artist of the Philippines for

Literature.

Among his voluminous works are The Woman Who Had

Two Navels, A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino, Manila,

My Manila: A History for the Young, The Ballad of the

Five Battles, Rizal in Saga, Almanac for Manileños,

Cave and Shadows.

Zacarias Eugene Francisco Quino Arcellana

(September 6, 1916 — August 1, 2002) was a

writer, poet, essayist, critic, journalist, and teacher

and one of the most important progenitors of Filipino

short stories in English. In 1990, he was declared National

Artist of the Philippines for Literature.

Two major collections of his works are:

 Selected Stories, 1962. content are The mats.

Alejandro Reyes Roces was a Filipino author, essayist,

dramatist and a National Artist of the Philippines for literature.

He served as Secretary of Education from 1962 to 1965,

during the term of Philippine President Diosdado Macapagal.

Alejandro Roces, is a short story writer and essayist and

considered as the country's best writer of comic short stories.

He is known for his widely anthologized “My Brother's Peculiar Chicken.”

In his innumerable newspaper columns, he has always focused on the

neglected aspects of the Filipino cultural heritage.

Dance

Francisca Reyes-Aquino was a Filipino folk dancer

and academic noted for her research on Philippine folk dance.

She is a recipient of the Republic Award of Merit and the

Ramon Magsaysay Award and is a designated National Artist

of the Philippines for Dance.

Reyes Aquino received the "Philippine Republic Award of Merit"

for her untiring efforts in collecting, compiling, and propagating

folk dances, and for her outstanding contribution to the advancement

of Filipino culture in the field of dance.

Ramon Arevalo Obusan
Ramon Arevalo Obusan was a Filipino dancer,

choreographer, stage designer and artistic director.

Obusan is credited for his work in promoting Philippine

traditional dance and cultural work. He is also an

acclaimed archivist, researcher and documentary filmmaker

who focused on Philippine culture.

Among Obusan's notable works are the following:[1]

Levi Celerio was a Filipino composer and lyricist

who is credited with writing over 4,000 songs. Celerio was

recognized as a National Artist of the Philippines for Music

and Literature in 1997.

He wrote the lyrics of the Filipino lullaby "Sa Ugoy ng Duyan".

He also composed folk songs including "Ako ay May Singsing",

"Ang Pipit", "Dungawin Mo Hirang", "Itik-Itik", "Pitong Gatang",

and "Waray-Waray" "Sa Ugoy ng Duyan", in particular, was

a collaboration with Lucio San Pedro, a fellow National Artist.

Jovita Flores Fuentes was a Filipina soprano singer.

One of the greatest Filipino vocal talents, National Artist

for Music Jovita Fuentes was also the first Filipino international

Due to her merits and contributions in her field, she was dubbed

as The First Lady of Philippine Music and in 1976 she earned the

title of becoming the first female national artist in music.

Lucio D. San Pedro, Sr.


Lucio D. San Pedro, Sr. was a Filipino composer and

teacher who was proclaimed a National Artist of the

Maestro San Pedro, the man who since 1933 once

nurtured the musical talents of the community youth,

continues to guide the musical growth of Angono National

Symphonic Band. Among his most famous masterpieces

were “Lahing Kayumanggi” (1961), “Sa Lupang Sarili” (1940),

“Sa Mahal Kong Bayan” (1950), among others.

Ramón Valera was a Filipino fashion designer who

was bestowed with the National Artist of the Philippines

honor in 2006. He is the first and only Filipino fashion

designer to receive this distinction to date.

The contribution of Ramon Valera, whose family hails

from Abra, lies in the tradition of excellence of his works,

and his commitment to his profession, performing his

magical seminal innovations on the Philippine terno.

Valera is said to have given the country its visual icon

to the world via the terno.

Salvador Floro Bernal was an artist from the Philippines.

Bernal's career began in 1969. His output included over

300 productions in art, film and music, and earned him

the award of National Artist for Theater and Design in 2003.

Acknowledged as the “Father of Theater Design in the

Philippines”, Bernal was instrumental inelevating theater

and production design as a fine art and a profession. He

helped establish the Production Design Center (PDC) as a

division under the then CCP Performing Arts Department

which he headed from 1981-1994.
