Summer Training is an integral part of B.

Tech which each and every student has to undergo for 2 months in a company and then prepare a project report on the same after the completion of training. The main objective of summer industrial training at 3rd year of B.Tech level is to develop skills in students by supplementing to their theoretical study of engineering. Industrial training helps to gain real life knowledge about the industrial environment and business practices. The summer training provides student with a fundamental knowledge of how what he has read in the book is applied in real world business and organizational functions and activities, as well as exposes him to strategic thinking of management. Professors give us theoretical knowledge of various subjects in the college but we are practically exposed of such subjects when we get the training in the organization. It is only the training through which I came to know that what an industry is and how it works. I learnt about various engineering operations being performed in the industry, which would, in return, help me in the future when I will enter the practical field ; as it is said ::::::::: Experience is the best teacher. I underwent summer training at Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a state-owned electric utility company headquartered in Gurgaon, India ; from 16th June 2011 to 31st July 2011. During this training I got a lot of experience and came to know about the engineering practices in load dispatch and communication (LD&C) department of POWERGRID through various lectures by employees of powergrid who have years of hands-on experience in various practical engineering practices (communication between remote terminal units and control centres ;energy management systems ; auxillary power systems ; cyber security ;information technology ; computer architecture and networks etc. ) . Also , to understand the working of the Grid system better Field trips were organised to NLDC, Katwaria Sarai. I have attempted to give an overall description of my training in this text ; with an emphasis to practical aspect of engineering being used in load despatch and communication department of POWERGRID and a show and tell description of the field trips with description of what equipments , workstations etc. I saw and what insight i gained into them. This entire text has been divided into chapters which have been catogarised and sorted in contents . Chapter 1: "POWERGRID at a glance" gives an introduction to Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) as an electric utility company and a business organisation . Chapter 2 : "how power grids work : perspective of an engineer" talks about what a power grid is ; and how it works from viewpoint of an engineer .

Chapter 3: "Load dispatch and communication" speaks about various engineering and management practices that were experienced while undergoing training in POWERGRID I set out to write this text with an aim of giving a broad , yet fairly in depth , and up to date coverage of engineering and management practices in LD&C department of POWERGRID . How far i have succeeded in this aim is for readers to judge . I would be grateful for comments from readers about the same . Karan Chadha electronics and communication engineering student Bhagwan Pashuram institute of technology IPU, Delhi.
