Activity 1.2 Read Smarter

1. What is the opinion of the writer about technology?

- Charles Taylor, an American author and academic, made a very notable comment on the
effects of technology on society. He stated that "The way we read, study, and buy books will be
changed fundamentally by virtual reality." Taylor is one of many authors who are expressing
opinions on the effects of technology on society. Technologies like virtual reality have a
profound impact on how people learn. The internet has changed how people access
information about anything from health to history to religion for example.
This means that authors are able to communicate their ideas to a researching audience. They,
therefore, tell you how they see the world. Of course, they are often conflicting and even
contradicting one another. This is not only because of the fact that people will have different
views on what it all means but also because of the different perspectives that Taylor has on this
subject.

2. Do you agree with the writer? Why? Why not?

- No, Because the author claims that technology is responsible for the "progress" in killing that
has occurred over time. He also claims that it is responsible for the moral decline in society. In
his view, "ignorant optimism" causes people to accept technological change while ignoring its
negative effects on people and societies. Where in fact we all know that technology is really
helpful in many ways.

3. State the first argument of the writer.

- The first reason technology negatively impacts youth is because it is destroying social skills.
Many people believe that it has the reverse effect, and that it enables people to always keep in
contact with their friends and family through texting or social media sites such as Facebook and
Twitter.

4. What is the conclusion of the writer?

- Imagine what will change in the next 40 years regarding the impact of technology on young
people and society as a whole, just as things have changed significantly since the first cell phone
was introduced 40 years ago. Changes must be done in our young and in the way this nation

raises its children in order to prevent the dreadful ramifications addressed throughout this
study.

5. If you were to write a position what will be your stance about technology?
- My stance about technology is that it has played a role in how we communicate and how we
obtain information. That being said, I believe that there are some drawbacks to the use of
technology in education. I think there is such a thing as too much screen time, and that
educators need to be careful not to lean too heavily on screens when teaching children and
adolescents. As long as teachers can find a balance between "real" activities like reading books
or engaging with other people in person, then I would say most educators should be fine with
using screen-based activities like videos or social media.
