POOLS 9C and 9F

Topic: Solids
Sub-topic: Volume of Cylinder
Teacher: Ms. C. Thomas

Objectives

Students should be able to:

1. identify the shape of the uniformed cross-section of a cylinder.

2. calculate the volume of a cylinder.

OBSERVE THE CYLINDER BELOW

WHAT SHAPE IS
THE UNIFORM
CROSS-SECTION?

If you answered “circle”, you are correct!

Calculating the area of a circle

The basic formula to find the area of a circle is πr2,
where r is the radius of the circle and π is 227 .
Examples
Calculate the volume of each solid below:

7cm Volume of Cylinder = area of circle x height of solid

= (πr2) x h
22 1
22 x 7 x 8 = 1232 =( x 7cm x 7cm ) x 8cm
8cm 71

= 1232cm3
NOTE: The height of the solid is the distance between the 2 end faces
π = 22 (circles). This is also referred to as the length or depth of the solid.

Volume of Cylinder = area of circle x height of solid
= (πr2) x h
m
= (3.14 x 3m x 3m) x 4m
= 113.04m3
π =3.14
NOTE: 28mm represents the
diameter of the circle. The
28mm radius is half the length of
the diameter, hence 14mm.

Volume of Cylinder = area of circle x height of solid

= (πr2) x h
10mm 68
22 2

22 x 2 x 14 x 10 = 6160
=( x 14mm x 14mm ) x 10mm
71

π = 22 = 6160mm3
